The pie floater

Quite a bit of history there.

Had these for lunch today, only takes 10 minutes to make if you use frozen peas.

Used to get them at the Adelaide train station pie cart on the way home after fishing.

I had one at Harrys Café de Wheels in Sydney in the 70's. What a way to ruin a perfectly good pie.
I scraped the peas into the garbo and ate the rest.

I think it stems back to when I was a kid. I hated cooked peas (still do, but I love them fresh in the pod)
Back then, unless you grew your own, you only had canned peas, frozen peas weren’t available . Couldn’t afford them from the green grocer either.
It is obviously like Pavlov’s dog but opposite. We were forced to eat the bl..dy things and I still have a gag reflex when I try them to this day. Ive tried eating a few and washed down with water but still gag.

I found out my old man didn't like peas when he was about 80. Couldn't believe it!

My kids don't like them either, I had no idea they were so unpopular.

I make pie floaters with frozen peas and gravy but the real deal is split peas soaked then cooked with bacon bones into pea soup. I can understand why some might not like this traditional version, but that split pea/bacon bone soup is damn fine in cold weather :D

Yummo , had many from the pie carts at various railway stations around Sydney .
The one at Liverpool station used to do a mushy pea mix on the Hot Dogs as well .

Brought a few good memories back Matt , guess what's for lunch today .
