Laughable idea and it won't happen. Won't go ahead as would kill off a lot of small high country towns and Parks. Besides a lot of the trout populations are self sustaining ,and there's 100's of remote streams ,they'll never get rid of them now unless they can produce a virus.
Victorian high country streams aren't really suitable for natives worth targeting by anglers. Maquarie Perch can tolerate the cold a bit, that's about it. I'm all for increasing Native Fish numbers back in our streams, but they're doing pretty well nowadays anyway. Trout are no threat to Cod,yella's etc, they eat them!
They've been pushing this one for a while, but there wasting time even doing so,cos it won't happen

I think they have already started doing this in some southern WA streams
Not heard of that one Matt, if anything there's a push to translocate eastern freshwater fish into WA to make up for the lack of recreational fish in the southern part of the state. We're alright up here

Pretty sure it's happening or has happened Dick, there's was a real hullaballoo about it at the time. Maybe it got stopped at the last minute as this was stuff I read last year. I'm talking about a couple of streams well south of Perth. I think the plan was to stop stocking trout and remove redfin. Also read about big problems with increasing salinity in the s-w WA streams. If I get a spare moment I'll try to dig up the articles.

The stopping of stocking in some area has happened. Problem is that there is nothing natural down there to catch. Trout and redfin are the only target species apart from the Marron.
Has been alleged that Murray Cod 'may' have been native down Albany way backin the early days of settlement. Big call but be nice to see some other native fish introduced.
Im playing right into Dicks hand now.

Nothing wrong with trout and redfin though - redfin are under-rated. They are a good-looking fish, they fight hard and are good eating for a freshie. And they take lures.
I know what you mean by the lack of natives Dodgy - the green movement will be happy if the streams are simply full of native minnows once the trout are gone. Economics and fun is not an issue.

Redfin are great fun. Used to go after them when I was down that way. Only problem with them is after a while they overpopulate a waterway and they all end up stunted.
Used to get some monsters when I first fished for them. 48cm was my personal best.
Really good to eat too. By far the best freshwater fish I've eaten.
