I have seen two landcruisers do in fifth gear over the years because of towing heavy loads constantly,i have been told that fifth gear in landcruiser gearboxs is an overdrive gear and is the smallest gear in the box and prone to wear out first.
I have allso been told that fifth gear in a nissan patrol gear box is an actual gear and not an overdrive and is better suited to towing heavy loads like caravans.

Owners manuals use to tell you not to tow in 5th
If you have a turbo your exhaust gases get way to hot
You should be towing a 90 to 100 kph which in 4th gear will put you at a good rev range for economy and not as much load on box

Dont worry Nissans do fifth gear as well
The past is history, the future is mystery, the moment is a gift and that's why it's called the present

Dont use fith gear in a Nissan to tow anything .
My Nissan ute had fith gear replaced by the previous owner due to towing a caravan in fith gear .
He specifically warned me not to do the same when I bought it off him.

kev.

Depends how big and heavy the trailer is really
I'm not a mechanic of any sort but here's a thought would you say 80% of any cars driving is done in 5th gear so that would mean more wear and tear on 5th not so much the towing a trailer for maybe 5% of a cars life time ??? Some food for thought really

dont tow in fifth gear. read your manual.
auto's generally have a higher towing capacity as well compared to manuals.

In almost all manual boxes 4th gear is 1 to 1 which means the input shaft and output shaft are simply locked together with the sincro, no gears are used, therefore making it the strongest gear.
Both Tojo & Nissan have a rep of blowing 5th, but i'd say this is because every time someone has a big van or boat, this is what they buy to tow them.
I towed with my Dicso 1/2 of the way around OZ with a camper trailer, then all around here with my boat for six years, all in 5th, but not overly heavy loads.

I must be lucky then cause my Navarra towed my old van (about 1.3t) around OZ about 1 1/4 times and then my boat which is heavier Port Macquarie to Darwin (over 4000kms) in 5th. Never had a problem
