I saw the story yesterday and a cold shiver went down my spine.
That is a tragedy in every respect.
Just think about it. It could have been any of us. A few mates go out for an enjoyable day on the water and this is the result. And it’s only a matter of time until it happens here. And when (not if) it happens, the result will be more fatalities
Every time you go out fishing up here, you are taking your life into your own hands.
Search and rescue aircraft and boats had been searching for the men since last night. (news.com.au) That’s great but our volunteer rescue boat is out of action most of the time. That leaves the coppers and that’s about it.
We all know that if you’re in trouble here, you are on your own. We have to rely on the kind heartedness of people like Jeffish and others to help out unless it’s a declared emergency
Here’s a sobering fact to think about On average, there were about 80 deaths, and nearly 1000 people admitted to hospital, each year as a result of boating incidents in Australia. Those admitted to hospital consumed more than 3934 hospital bed days each year. Source http://www.nmsc.gov.au/media/pages_medi ... Report.pdf
that’s more than 3 deaths every fortnight (doesn’t take into account the asylum seekers). think about it, that could be a boat load of your mates that die on the water- every forthnight
I’m amazed by the lack of concern shown by the Territorian boating community with regards to the lack of rescue services here.
I suppose its just something we learn to live with (or die with) up here. why do we accept that we are 2nd class citizens just because we live here?? can you imagine the ACT being left with the poor standards that we put up with? not a chance of it.

Agree 100% with Nomad!
Why do we not have the S&R capabilities of the other states?
Why isn't the government at least funding the volunteer rescue boat as they do in other states?
Boating here is arguably more dangerous than down south (although i guess down there hypothermia gets you and up here you get eaten) but with the huge tides and so many reefs etc, there is more to hit here.
What's the solution??
Boat registration and licensing money's to fully fund a rescue boat?? We've already seen that it would be about as popular as a smear test.
So what IS the solution?? Is there one??

Another tragic story of people losing the loved ones. We are lucky enough in Portland that we have volunteer coast gaurds that will go out in almost any condition to help and assist people through either their own stupidity or mechanical failure, they all deserve medals for their service considering they could head out into the southern ocean 50 or 60 kms all for the betterment of the community

Thanks for the kind words nomad, but as a skipper I only did what I think was my duty,,I,m still waiting for a responce to the email I sent the Hon Mr Kon in regards to rescue service in Darwin,or should I say the lack of one.
sarge you make a valid point if boat rego would fund a fully opperational rescue service ,then I,m all for it

Yeah again, good on you Jeffish. I wonder if others are aware that the law states that you should have your radio on at all times? and that you must respond. Is it just the 'she'll be right' attitude up here or do people think 'bugger that Im fishing, let someone else' help out.
I sent emails to Rob Knight, whose electorate the incident occurred, and Terry Mills. The silence is deafining. wouldnt you think they would at least make a token effort to respond?
Like i said, it will take a multi fatality here before something happens. Its just a matter of time
