Hey Guys,
Doesnt look like a lot of people get on here from that region, though just wanting a bit of feedback in regards to how the fishing does down that way? Will be going down in a couple of months fishing from a 5m boat, wondering what to expect?? also how do you think it compares to fishing out of Darwin??

Hey champ it is great fishin over there. We did a two week trip and used hook island as our base. We draged a 6.5m glass boat up from brisbane. Had a ball cought every thing from jacks of the rocks to bill fish to reef fish. IMO the fishing is beter there then here (darwin).

cheers mate, I have fished there a couple of times and done pretty well but people keep telling me Darwin is the best fishing spot in OZ! I dont think you can compete with the GBR to tell you the truth!! Plus you got your creek systems also with the likes of all your barra/salmon/jacks, thn the reef fishing is pretty much insane. Thansk for the reassurance, keen as.

Allister, if the wind picks up you don't need to go far from the ramp at Shute Harbour to catch a Coral Trout. You can pick them just on the edge of the channel about 600m from the ramp. The main probelm with the region is the current strength between the islands can make your boating a bit bumpy until you get closer to the islands. Out on the reef the fishing is exceptional. My brother in law fishes out past where Fantasea drops off the day snorklers. Hook Reef I think is the name of the group. We've caught Spanish Mackeral, Coral Trout, Red Throat, Red Emporer etc etc. Pushing a 5m boat out that far would need near glass conditions though. Proserpine River holds Barra and Jack. Able Point Marina rock walls and the Airlee Beach Sailing Club rock walls hold barra and jack also. North of Airlee Beach is Dingo Beach. You can get to better grounds out from there without travelling too many miles in your boat.

cheers dex, just got me bitting at the bit. I have actually been out to that fantasea pontoon out there, from sorkeling there is obviously a lot of fish there!! Hopefully get some good weather to get out wide then!! Cant wait to hook up to a few coral trout and other reef fish, all my recent outings in darwin/dundee have been pretty poor. Appreciate the feedback, might even pencil in dingo for a few days if that is the case!

yeh mate, i lived at airlie for a year. great spot. Awesome fishing, anywhere around shute harbour, we only had a 4.3 tinny or something, cruised all around the closer islands. nice big coral trout (bigger than we get here)
sorry i don't have any marks or anything but anywhere with good structure around the islands will produce reefys.

yeah thats aweome! cannot wait! if anybody does hae some good points and if they dont sharing that would help heaps, guessing cause most of us live up here I might be able to pry a few out of you haha anyway keen to hook into a few decent fish down that way, prob have a spear also as I heard that is pretty good too- though dont think it could compete with nailing a big trout on a popper from a shallow reef! Reading up on a fair few reports lately and there are some pretty good catches down that way, hopefully get in some good weather and get out to hook reef and the outer reef for some of those big red fish!
