On our way back from Weipa with plenty of time up our sleeves the skipper decided to stop off at a remote island surrounded by reef. A grave and various plant life interested him, so anchoring a couple of hundred meters away we launched the rescue boat for a looksie. Weather was fantastic best day ive seen during my short time working there, water crystal clear and sand so white a place you can easily fall for. With only an hour to do our thing me and the 1st mate went for a fish whilst the rest of the boys went searching for there grave of an ex pearl diver.
Realising i forgot my pliers i didnt use any trebled lures so used soft plastics to prevent alot of hassle. So we drift on the outer edge of the reef flicking over the top bringing it back in no more than 2 feet of water, and bang to my amazement strike on my first cast. With a few surface breaks and some hard runs i thought maybe a little mack but wasnt to be as i pulled in the largest longtom ive seen or caught. A few cast later the mate chris was on pulling up a spanish flag the size im not use to(pan size darwin harbour goldie) it wasnt the first, caught 5 between both of us. It didnt stop going fish with nearly every cast, when the coral trout started coming in, 7, but only keeping 2 as 40cm is the minimum. Continuously having a ball with stripes and even a few queenies which were time consuming on my spin stick, i was struck with frustration on a monster trout that smashed the lure at my feet then watching the shadow dissappear under a reef bed never to return. Wasted 25mins just hoping it would come out when the skipper called on the radio reqeusting pick up with no more time to spare i got the sh!@#ts i snapped it off but still stoked none the less with a good session one i didnt expect.
