I am L/B only (for now, and the next couple of years until the boys get older), and I don't tend to fish well down in the Harbour/arms, so (maybe a bit selfishly) in general I don't expect it to affect me greatly (with the proviso's about turbidity, accidents etc. that Matt mentioned).

It might at the start but i think in the long term it will produce just as well if not better. The amount of fish you see around the DLNG plant is amazing there are massive schools of barra, queenies and other species. The issue will be access. Saying that all these fish come and go with the current just need to be at the right spot at the right time like anywhere.

Well if everything that the Government says is going to happen id have to say no! But of course like what Matt said you have those random events that occur and it only takes one big one to completely screw up the marine environment. But until then (i hope it never happens) id have to say it wont effect the fishing in the harbour and off the coast!

There are several levels of impacts that could be considered. - the immediate environmental damage that will go with removing Walker Shoal will cause short term impact for the harbour. Use of explosives underwater is serious as water doesn't compress like air which means the shock waves will be quite damaging. - Building of the plant will mean destruction of some mangrove habitat and increased silt runoff into the harbour in the short term. - As Matt said more areas where access in restricted has an obvious impact. But for me the overwhelming long lasting impact impact will be the people it brings into Darwin and the building of new suburbs in the habour catchment. This will dwarf the construction from the plant itself. Darwin Harbour is what it is because its catchment is largely undeveloped. There will also be a whole lot more recreational fisherman living in Darwin with the increased population all competing for the same fishing.

Great point. And the impact at the boat ramps will be significant.
As population grows, they'll chip away at the mangroves, piece by piece.

i know its kinda off subject but did anyone read the nt news today, you know the one with the crocodile on it. lol that ship they turned around has starting leaking gas forming ice which is going into the water, so if a little boat with a little gas can do that whats a plant capable of if something happens there? this ship is not in the harbour at the moment but inpex will be smack bang. i know its farfetched but worth bringing up

Speaking from experience at Karratha, the rock they have put down to cover the gas pipeline has provided some excellent new habitat for reef fish and is now one of the most fished areas for smaller boats. The channel markers are also great spots to get bait from and the occasional big fish. Apparently 20 years ago the fishing was fantastic in close, but now are having to go further and further to get big fish, though not having bag limits for years allowed people to rape and pillage like they used to in the NT. People just filling up esky's with no regard to the effect it was having on fishing sustainability. The biggest issue from the gas plant is the population increase as previously mentioned by other people. There are very strict environmental and safety guidelines and all major hazards are reduced to as low as reasonably practicable which is usually somewhere in the region of once in 1000 to 10,000 years. The companies have to put in a safety case which identifies all major hazards and what the company is doing to make them safe. LNG ships are some of the most tighly controlled ships in the world so the risk of an incident that has a large environmental effect is very low. The ship leaking gas is a container ship and the gas is actually a refrigerant and is also used to ripen fruit.

Hi Matt, The Japanese pay a different price for LNG compared to the natural gas price in america. Try http://www.mongabay.com/images/commodit ... t-lng.html. The price of LNG keeps going up as Nuclear reactors in Japan are being decommissioned due to Tsunami. This puts more pressure on Japanes Power companies to import more LNG to generate more power using natural gas as their primary fuel.
