Great links. There are so many knots around for different uses it is hard to remember them all. What the site dose'nt tell you is which knots are better in the strengths department. For example the spider hitch is a weaker knot than both the plait & the bimini twist in that it only gives about 70 to 80 % line strength whereas the others give 100%.
It amazes me how many people are unaware of this & continue to tie the spider. The bimini is as easy to tie when you get used to it.

One of my customers has made tying bimini's a sinch. I always use them in the shop when putting leaders on for customers and got sick of winding 50 turns the doing the knot about ten times a day. It's a motorised gizmo that does all the twisting for you. Pretty simple really but he does'nt like me showing people as he wants to produce it and sell it. I'll have a word to him and see what he's doing about it. Cause once you use it you'll only ever tie biminis for your conections.

I can understand you getting sick of tying 10 or more a day in the shop but unless you have a very bad day you would only tie 2 or 3 in the boat in a day & thats no trouble at all.
I'm half blind & I tie them in the dark with very little effort.

I just came across something very interesting in Harro's book "Barramundi"
quote "The Bimini Twist is in widespread use, but does not deliver anywhere near the 100% achieved with a mono. On a good knotting day, one might get 80%." unquote.
Being the major driving force behind Bionic Braid, if anyone knows his knots in gelspun line, it's Rod Harrison.
His recommended double knot in gelspun is "Harro's Quickie Double Knot", basically all it's a four turn overhand knot.
This prompted me to do some testing of my own:
I tied up five knots of both variety in 20 lb Millennium Hotfibre II and Bionic Braid.
All ten pieces tied with the Bimini broke at the knot at between 13 and 17 lbs of tension.
The other test pieces tied with the Harro quickie double knot; 7 pieces broke in the line itself, away from the knot, at between 18 and 21 lbs of tension, the remaining 3 broke at the knot, all at 19 lbs, these 3 breaking at the knot I put down to bad knotting technique.
These test were enough to convince me that I'm giving the Bimini the coit and going with Harro's knot, the bonus is it can be tied in 1.5 seconds flat.

Bulk Kudos to Blinky for confirming something I had been suspecting for a while about biminis in braid. (The Jewies and GT's were trying their hardest to give me the tip!) I had been wondering why when using 10kg (pretty heavy I know) of drag on 50lb bionic or fins I was getting smoked by bimini failures, at first I thought it might have been incorrect tying technique but being a knot nazi my tying is generally pretty bl..dy good (I still take the time to plait mono as I don't trust the inherant distortion a bimini puts in the line, no failures in mono for ages by the way) maybe it's not me it might be the knot so the harro knot might be the go. A pity plaits in braid dont seem to work, although I havent done any testing in a while. The problem with the earlier generation braided lines was that while the plait would standup under 100% load as soon as you put any sudden shock into the system they sheared away at the first cross over on the plait. Maybe the new generation of braids won't do this time to get out the scales and do some testing I think.

How do you think this knot would work as a Paternosta type rig with braid instead of mono?? Think I might give it a go see how it holds up to bottom bashing....

The bimini twist double (50-60 turns) is a brilliant double with braid. Never had an issue. Trying to learn the plait though which is a bit more difficult
