Plenty of squid around the wharf but are pretty wise to squid jigs. Might get the odd one or two but most are caught using a drawstring cast net. Couple of areas there are better than the rest but there is a pretty strict pecking order so it can get interesting at times.

A cast net off the wharf works well on the small torpedo squid at night. They come and go in twos and threes and sometimes schools.
The bigger tiger squid appear off the wharf but seem more common around the foreshores on a solo basis. See more of the big tigers at places like Cobourg. They don't seem to be as common as the big squid down south.

mate i go for squid fairly regularlyand they are rather quiet at the moment. best spot is under the lights at stokes warf and off the floating platform. you will need a draw string net and some jigs. we use the jigs to bring em out from the shadows and then cast em. if you see 1 wait a second or 2 and another couple will usally follow. can be hard work sometime but we have returned 60 in a cast on a good night. check out the photo this was the result of one cast

hard too keep alive but you can do it. clean water is a must so a recirculating live bait tank works best. if they ink out in the water it kills em fast. great live baits barra love em!! but so does every other fish in the ocean. have used them on the wrecks with some sucsess. they dont last long on the bottom
not a big fan of calamari but the missus loves it. but must admit when its fresh and cooked right it not to bad

mmmmm salt and pepper squid. Ive had good success with a cast net from the boat in the harbour. The squid seemed to like the starboard side green light and came up following baits. One night I noticed heaps of birds working behing a big ship with floodlights lighting the water at the stern. The birds were after the thousands of squid that had been atracted to the light.
I havn't been able to get a squid on a jig like you do down south. Not sure the suckers up here know that they are supposed to jump on them. Anyone had success with jiggs Jigging squid is great fun.

Yeah Pete, got a few one night when I was working on the Mandora jetty on the small sized jigs but they were pretty cagey compared to the big ones down south oz.

I used to get a few of mandorah jetty in my jetty rat days used just leave it on the surface and let the current or waves do the work when the rod bent over you knew one was on. Then on they went for live bait. Any extras were cooked up when we got home love em!!!
