I Know this isn't a travel or 4WD site, but I'm planing on going on a trip from Darwin to Cairns via the Savanah Hiway through to Hells gate then onto Cairns in Oct. So I would be interesed to see if anyone else on here has done the trip and I they have could they give me some pointers of tips..
the roads pretty good generally but make sure you take a couple of spare tyres...couple of river crossings between borroloola and hells gates so keep an eye on rainfalls before you make the decision to go that way I've seen some big storms rolling in off the gulf in early October, the coppers in Doomadgee will put you on the bag as soon as they see you come over the horizon plenty of cattle on the road to keep an eye out for as well, Once back on the blacktop it's all good Burketown pub does good feeds and the caravan park there is a good spot to break the trip same goes for Normanton the road up and over the Great Dividing Range has good scenery and there's some touristy stuff from there to the coast...times I've been there I peeled off to the south and into Townsville so the rest of the road into Cairns I don't have any info The local coppers are the best for the latest road info if it's started to rain Hells Gates didn't have tomato sauce for their pies last time I was there
