Newbie To Australian Fishing

Post by aRobbo »

Hi i recently came over from england and decided to take up fishing as i did quite abit of it back at home.
Although i am not new to fishing i am new to the Australian way of fishing up here in Darwin, I am used to fishing fresh water lakes at home.

I went and bought a rod and reel etc the other day and now looking for the best location to start off.
People have mentioned Nightcliff, Buffalo Creek and Lee Point to me, i was just wondering what Tackle/Bait is best to use at these locations?

Thanks in advance.

i think this may be in the wrong subforum, apologies if it is.

A live mullet or better yet a live prawn will be the most sure fire way to get a fish. Failing that, dead but fresh works too.

The most important rig is how to tie a leader to your main line. Learn a good leader knot, either FG, Slim beauty or improved Albright (IMO best to worst and difficult to easiest). You can use that basic rig for almost any setup, from lures, live bait and modified for bait fishing.

Get a hook to suit the live bait size, anywhere from a 3/0 to an 8/0 and tie it on (there are tonnes of knots that will suffice). A small float clipped to the leader with the hook at the end.

The best bet is to buy the bible, best $30 you can spend to get started.

Hi,
"The Bible" is a Magazine called Fish Finder, it is available at all Tackle Shops, and most places that sell Magazines.
I have picked them up at Petrol Stations.
They come out every 2 Years, and I think the new one has just been released.

This Site is associated with the Magazine

Most people like fishing Lee Point on the morning high tides, but there are some spots to fish at low tide.

Buffalo Creek is usually fished on tides rather than morning/arvo, it can be good at night but keep in mind the crocs.

East Point is worth a look for LB fishing, there are various platforms at different stages of the tide.

Complicated subject, depends what you want to fish for.

Tackle and lures for LB pelagics very different from chasing barra.

Suggest visiting the local tackle shops as they can usually spare time to talk about your plans and set you up properly. Darwin has great tackle shops.

Buffalo creek is best fished on the big tides, its about 2-3 hours behind Darwin tide times. First push is your best bet with live mullet. If you're game enough, there is a path through the mangroves next to the boat ramp that takes you down to the rock bar where most people who know the place well fish. Keep your eyes peeled for crocs though as they have been seen in the mangroves.

Lee point is good on hide tide early morning for Queenfish, use silver slugs with a fast retrieval. Low tide can also be fun as there is a big quite an expansive rock bar that you can walk over to fish for other species.
