GQ Upgrades - Big Lamp Brilliance Intensifier of Autocar

Post by Matt Flynn »

Been doing some work on my GQ - dropped a new radiator in, making new door trims and installing new window winder mechanisms coz I dislike the electric windows.

And new headlights ...

Which brings me to the attached pic. Anyone guess what it is?

Looks like Chinglish for "Spot light Relay" which of course is marketing w@nk for "relay switch".

Pretty much - a heavy duty loom with relay for better headlights, as installing beams that draw more current eventually burns out the standard wiring and switch. Love the translation.

Turns out it is a very special loom ... makes one light high beam, the other low beam, and on switching to high beam, there's no beam!

Hopefully rewiring the relays will fix it, was expecting plug and play tho.

That's exactly how I like my lights wired, it would be plug and play for me...

Got both headlights glowing the same (bad earth on one side) but can't work out the lack of high beam. Checked the wiring diagram and swapped relays, only thing I've noticed is that I'm getting only 9V on one of the original headlight wires, might not be enough to trip the new relay, but I doubt it.

Saga continues ... with loom going back for replacement. At least it isn't a gearbox ...

I dropped in at Repco to buy auto-electric spade connectors, $8 a pack ...

Stopped at Mitre 10 on the way home and saw same packets of connectors for $4.

Do you have a roadtechmarine store nearby? They have a huge range at under 4 bucks.

Bunnings had a set of various types and sizes for under 20 too at xmas time in Noosa.

No roadtechmarine here unfortunately, mostly just sheep. But I know now that the local Mitre10 is much cheaper for connectors and diesel oil ...

Loom replaced and everything works, supplier said it was a dud five-pin relay, which is odd coz I tried another relay ...

All good tho.

Yay!

Fitting light kits/bars is so much easier these days with the supplied looms, i remember wiring many up with the crimped connectors straight onto the relay from the dodgy under-dash switch....
