Rail mount rod holders

Talk about the gear you can't afford and knots you can't tie.

Rail mount rod holders

Has anyone had experience with either of these types of rod holders? Good or bad? I'm looking to get a few for my tinny. Will probably troll with them a bit, bit of live baiting and bottom bashing. Not sure which type is a better all rounder. Cheers.

I use the one on the bottom on my console, only issue due to having a thin grab rail I had to cut down bolts to make it bottom out. Other then that there a good product, won't break it that's for sure

Yeah I also use the one in the second picture , no real issues but have had them work
loose a few times , I just check there tight before going out. Be careful not to over tighten
they strip easy.

Plastic ones might be lighter and not cause electrolysis

I also have one of the bottom ones on my console, and plan to fit another. I think they are great.

Had similar to the top ones year before and lost a couple of rods over the side.

when the rod bend down and suddenly flicks back up, it bounces straight out of the holder.

Thanks for the replies. Made the decision easier, got the bottom ones. Alfie that's what I was worried about, they don't seem as secure if bashing around in rough weather.

I've got a set of the bottom ones mounted on my side rails at the rear of the boat - followed the above advice re:cutting the bolts down and have no dramas. I use them for fast trolling big lures on 10-15kg gear for Macks and Big trevally and haven't had a drama. That being said i have made some lanyards from 28 strand nylon coated wire and always ensure the rods are leashed to the boat. Mackerel strikes at 15km an hour can be harsh on heavy gear! I'm going to cut the plastic "base" out of the bottom to allow more rod to sit in the holder before I head out next as well.
