Help with spring set up

Post by Andy Grey »

Hey Guys, Looking to put in longer springs for ride softening as my boat currently bounces (I hate that banging noise) on the standard hard spring set up on the Hornet Telwater (see photos). Trailer is single axle 13inch, carrying Hornet Trophy 4.35 with 40Hp and all the usual rubbish. So weighted approx (boat my guess 400 -450kg) (trailer 249kg) Has anyone got any recommendations on springs for this setup? How can I soften the ride aside from tyre deflation?

Currently in SA, dreaming of the run off. :)
cheers

Just get some 4 leave springs and try them i'm sure it would be easier than those Falcon springs.......Also if the boat is banging how do you secure it to the trailer?..........Have you tried a turnbuckle at the front to stop it from moving at all?

Hey Basstad..cheers for the advice. Thinking about these ones for ease of job. Not sure what the standard Telwater ones are but would assume they are 500kg models. Found some more here too. http://www.trailerwarehouse.com.au/cont ... /d265.html

Yep, I secure with turnbuckle and tie strap down across transom to hold ass end (but not too tight) but she sounds like she still bangs on every pothole (south australian roads are basically just endless potholes) Thinking about those corrugations in the Kimberly and NT.

Hi Andy, the banging noise is more than likely just your slipper springs, if you want to get rid of that you will have to go to an eye to eye Spring with shackles. Not a big deal but you will have to weld a spring hanger onto the trailer, meaning breaking the galvanising. And get greasable pins so they won't seize up. I'm going through the proscess now of doing the same thing. I'm not sure why so many boat trailers run slipper springs, I'm guessing for ease of maintenance.

Yep eye to eye with shackle is the go........pretty sure you can get a bolt up bracket also....I think you would still have to cut away the old slipper sleeve's though.

Hi Barnzy...I hate that banging noise......hurts. Thanks for your input. I currently have access to the old man who can weld so no issues. Reading up it seems that it's the general consensus that for anything 'off road' slipper springs are not recommended. Given that I will be doing a bit of off roading (WA to NT) I am now leaning towards the eye to eye shackle set up. Should I keep the similar current 5 leaf for eye to eye or go down to 4 say 450kg?

Best bet is too get your trailer weighed fully packed with the gear you would have on a normal trip. Not sure where u could do it down there but I just put mine over the public truck scales up here. Only go as heavy as you need. Being a single axle trailer id put bigger tyres on it and run a lower tyre pressure when you go off-road.

Good idea barnzy..have a woodyard supplies down the end of the road with a weighbridge so might just do that.

Have your thought about a single spring type. Is it analbolic???? or something like that?

I had them on an old trailer they have so much more give and flex for a smoother ride.
A mans boat is a sign of his strengths and weaknesses???? (and wealth)

How about this for a quick solution.

Fitt new Al-Ko 4 leaf 900kg slippers. And at the same time fix a pair of these on

Thoughts?
Running out of time now so gotta get a solution decided fast.
