Thx for posting that data jpb15.
I'm surprised by the growth rate or lack of for #1; 3cm in 11 months and #2; 2cm in 6 months. For fish of that size I would have expected a more significant increase? Poor wets leading to low food availability and increased stress and/or inability to feed for extended periods due to concentration of sharks......not sure but I would think those figures are below average?

Yes JPB15, I am almost certain that barra are relatively territorial when at a juvinile stage. I also think the schools of fish will return every year or so to the same locations in a river that they are born in. The few tags I have caught have all been with in a 5km stretch of river 2 years after initial capture.

I accept what you are saying, and I must admit in the past, we questioned the results ourselves.
I just wrote down the numbers the other day, without reading them.
Our measuring stick is in 5 cm increments, and is more accurate than the shrinking, or undersized Brag Mats.
At times, we thought maybe they, (whoever tagged the fish) had 2 fish at once, and recorded the wrong fish, to the wrong number.
I am sure all our measurements would be within 2 cm.

I was thinking that but the downside is those areas may then be heavily targeted by fishermen in any following competition.

Jpb it's good to know the same fish can be fooled at least twice.

Mate not questioning your measurements and comp fish are verified and matched to tag #'s, so they should be correct. I'm interested in what appear to be slow growth rates for 1-2ish year classes and the potential reasons. Anyway, getting off topic; almost 12% of tagged fish recaptured in a few months is the real surprise for me!

I am also surprised 8 fish have been caught.

I think it is time we started putting pressure on the Gov't to extend the Comp.

Even if the Million Dollar fish was discounted to say (pick a number), and continue for a couple more months.
I am sure all of the Tourism Industry would think it would be a good idea to continue the Comp, into the Better fishing season.

Is there any hard factual evidence that this promotion has brought any great increase in visitors or $'s to the Topend ??

From what I can gather, all tagged fish have been caught by locals - not that I've got any issue with that - just say'n .....

does anyone know if these fished were wild fish tagged and released or were they farmed barra. The latest one particularly looks awful dark for a salt water fish. Still amazed 8 have been caught have to eat humble pie on that 1

Maybe not that much this year but if this comp is going to run for the few years as mentioned it has to be good for tourism. Last I heard there was over 30,000 registered

Wasn't it rumoured that once comp ends its going to be $100 or so a tag. And new colour tags for next year.

I hear spare parts and boat mechanics have done quite well out of it. With those who have not been out in a few years inspired to just off the old tinny... And then break down not far from the ramps
