Sounder help
Looking at getting a new sounder soon was thinking the lowrance hds9 gen3. Does anyone know if they come with side scan or is it something extra you need. Im useless when it comes to electronics so any help would be good. Pros and cons with this. I have a hummingbird at the moment I think it's the first of there side imaging so looking at something better.

Re: Sounder help
hi hobbit, you will need to get the skimmer transducer plus the structure scan transducer so you will have 2 transducers. you can operate it without the structure scan transducer but then it would be a waste of the peice of kit as its all set up for structure.
generally the sounder comes without the skimmer or the structure transducer

by the way, the gen 3 is mint- touch screen is awsome and the structure scan is great just takes some getting used to ext.
google structure scan 3d it comes out in november for the lowrance may be worth holding off to get that transducer insted looks mint!

Re: Sounder help
Hobbit, I have just fitted the exact sounder to my new boat. I can tell you it is mint. Go and see the boys at IOB marine. They are the cheapest in Australia. About $2980 with both transducers. Which is a con compared to the hummingbird which only requires one transducer for both structure and down imaging.
The Gen 3 comes standard with CHIRP, Wireless so you can use a tablet on the boat at the front for example if you are casting and see what your sounder is seeing and an upgraded 10 mhz GPS receiver so the GPS is more accurate.
Im looking at buying another 9 or 12 GEN2 and linking them together as well as linking into my MNEA2000 network. That way everything I can see on my GEN3 I will be able to see on my GEN2. Including my engine interface and fusion Black Box.
Good luck mate and if you need anymore advice just shoot me a PM.

Re: Sounder help
Why spend all that money on a sounder? Use a stick to see the depth and put goggles on to see if there is any fishes hahaha

Re: Sounder help
So the 3D is an add on? Will it work on the Gen2 touches? I'm about to buy one, but if I need the Gen3 for 3d then I need to find some more pennies

Re: Sounder help
After speaking to the Lowrance Rep yesterday it's looking like its going to be more like $1200 and is due out on the 1st November. It is already out in the USA. You will need a Gen 3 it doesn't work with Gen 2 is my understanding. It is a new transducer and a box that the transducer plugs into, similar to old LSSII box. Have a look on YouTube.
so my set is currently a HDS 9 Gen 3 and i just boought at the boat show HDS 7 Gen 2. I am going to link these with a NMEA2000 and Ethernet cable. This will allow me to contrl the Motor guide and Fusion Black box from both sounders. It also means that I still only require the 2 transducers. When the 3D comes out I will replace the LSS transducer with the 3D one.
