Bad start to the day

Post by john d »

Went to go for a fish this morning but the engine had other ideas.
Got to the ramp early and got everything ready.
A quick engine start at the top of the ramp, which was a bit sluggish but went fine
Backed into the water dropped the leg and hit the starter.
The engine turned over fine but would not fire.
This is unusual as the motor usually goes first time.
Had it out last week and ran faultlessly.
Took it out of the water and checked everything we could.
It has fuel, spark, compression seems fine and there is no alarms going of.
Checked all the fuses and wire connections all seemed to be good.
The engine is a suzuki df115 05 model.
Anyone with any suggestions.
Anyone have the number of a good mobile mechanic as I want to hook it up to a computer.
Cheers
John..

Fuel , spar and compression should go bang
Unless somehow the timing of the spark is out
Or valve timing if it's a four stroke

Is the kill switch lanyard still connected? If you pull the clip it wont start but every thing else will work fine.

If the kill switch is activated you will have no spark

Thanks guys.
The first thing we checked was the kill switch and clip.
Only replaced the switch unit a few months back.
Had fuel at the rail after the pump and high pressure filter, spark, and compression so cant work it out.
There were no warning alarms or lights going off so pretty stumped as to what went wrong.
Stuffed around with it for 1/2 hour before giving up .
Was cleaning the boat out last night and gave it a few goes, eventually started firing so put on the muffs and let it run for a while .
Ran no worries????. :banghead:
I am taking it to the guys at Quality to put it on the computer to see if there is some issue with something.
The engine has run well for years but I have lost a bit of confidence in it, especially as I have some trips out wide coming up
Lucky it happened at the ramp and not the perons or north gutter

Air sensor. I have had it go on my engine. I was down around lizzy on the Daly at the time.
After some time managed to get it running with high idle lever in the fully on position but would not idle. was a well timed manouver of bringing lever down and engaging ahead with some throttle to keep the engine running and got me back to the ramp.

Replaced under warranty luckily.

I think Pagey is close to the mark. The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve when failing / failed displays the symptoms with your motor. It is not an uncommon problem with a number of different 4 strokes. Not that cheap to replace unfortunately.

Or a pinched ignition wire in the wiring lume. Had that before after a service from that place you mentioned. I was 40 miles wide of Dundee when it died. After trying to get it started for an hour it eventually turned over. Got it back to Blaze when it died again. Got towed from there to Dundee. Just another possibility. I have a Honda so may be different but just a thought if it ain't the Air censor.

Cheers guys.
Took it in to get looked at but there was not much they could do as it was running fine.
If it happens again i will take it back before getting it going so they can pinpoint the problem
Started it up every day since without it missing a beat.
Going to take it for a run next week and will get another boat to tag along just in case.
Got me a bit nervous as I have a few trips wide planed for later in the year.
Will just have to see what happens.

Lol That is exactly what mine did. It took them 3 attempts to find it. They also squashed my fuel line in the grommet that goes into the cowling on the motor by over tightening the hose clamp. At least I got a 6 pack of beer out of that but didn't get my canopy fixed when it ran into the trees in a 7m tide at the mouth of buffalo because it stopped 20 seconds after putting it on the plane.

Any way thats my winge over, I hope your issue gets solved quickly and cheaply!
