Is it getting windier?
For discussion ...
Some Territory fishos reckon it is getting windier.
I had a quick look at Weather Bureau data.
***
The mean 9am wind speed at Darwin Airport from 1885 to 1942 was 7.4km/h.
This compared with the 1941 to 2010 period, which was 10.9km/h.
The mean 9am wind speeds at Darwin Airport for the years 2006-09 were all around 14.5km/h.
***
It appears there has been a steady increase in mean wind speed.
Or are they just using better oil on the wind gauge?
Keep in mind that mean wind speeds include the build-up and wet season calm periods.
The Weather Bureau graphs were quite startling re dry season wind speeds.
All the graph comparisons I did with previous 30-year periods against the year 2010 showed that 2010 was windier.
If it is getting windier from rising temperatures, then global warming means fewer fishing hours because of rough weather.
Increasing winds would also mean coastal waters are more turbid from wave action, which would impact marine life.
If global warming is increasing temperature gradients, will there be 50km/h south-easterlies blowing in June 2050?
Admittedly, this was just a quick analysis of the Weather Bureau data.
But it is an interesting topic.
(For newbs, Darwin is windy in the dry season with mostly south-easters because of high pressure systems over Australia.)

Re: Is it getting windier?
That's correct Matt. As you know the planet's spin is slowing down, that's why days seem longer now, particularly Mondays. However what happens is that the air has a chance to slowly catch up to the speed of rotation. Hence the wind appears to be blowing stronger. This of course will come to a head when the rotation stops completely and everything has a chance to equalise. Of course that won't be for too long as the planet will then start to unwind spinning the other way faster and faster until it slows again in due course making the wind speed appear to be increasing again.
Regards Dick

Re: Is it getting windier?
Thats due to the magnetic poles about to switch from N to S. Then the winds will blow the other way

Re: Is it getting windier?
Problem solved, it is the hot air coming from Kununurra creating a low pressure cell, thus creating an easterly flow over Darwin

Dried apricots are all you need to make eyes water.
Looks like there will be more breeze to carry it away in future.

Been out in Arnhem Land community for 12 years now. I do believe it's now a lot more windier than when I first arrived. Then again I could have arrive at a lucky time when you could get into the blue water action on most days either in the morning or afternoon without it being too windy.
Now it's blowy most of the time with the odd lucky spell.

Or you are getting older and less adventurous. I know I have slowed down on the suicide missions in cyclonic winds. I actually look at a weather report these days! lolMace wrote:Been out in Arnhem Land community for 12 years now. I do believe it's now a lot more windier than when I first arrived. Re: Is it getting windier?
I wish I took a better look for yesterday ,,, 4 hours to get back from Bass rf.
They wind started at dawn and increased to around 20 kts .
And yes it does seem to be windier out wide this year I find it doesn't drop
off late arvo like it used to.
But hey , it's weather and there ain't no rule book , could head out again today
and jag perfect conditions,
