Home Valley Station via Gregory NP

Post by BJOBrien »

Heading off for 5-6 days camping/fishing/touring with the wife, not taking the boat. At this stage we're planning to camp 1 or 2 nights in Gregory NP, on the East Baines River maybe? Then 2 or 3 nights at Home Valley station on the Pentacost, bit more camping and sightseeing aswell as helifishing if we can, maybe a night in Kununurra on the way back. That's our very rough itinerary, can anyone recommend anything we should see or do over that way? I've never been before, and I wanna make the most of it, plus get a few fish. Trip is very flexible, nothing is booked and we're self sufficient.

the bush camping at el questro is pretty good, you get a site right on the river if you are lucky. Some sites have better river access than the other. Didn't catch anything tho... Same at home valley, there's the campsite up top with the better facilities, or the open (not much shade) down the bottom with more limited facilities. You camp right by the river down there and fish. Didn't catch anything there either.

Apparently there is some goat track you can drive on between Wyndam and Home Valley that some bloke was raving on about last year, i believe its marked out on Hema maps.

Watch that crossing just before Home Valley, I did three tyres going over and back on it over about 5 days, and two more on the next river. make sure your rubber is up to scratch and not like the soft as butter Toyos that I tried to get across on.

Forget home valley and stay at El questro, home valley used to be awesome when you could drive into the valleys and gorges yourself but now it's all closed for that unless you pay to be escorted. As Jabsy said the bush camps at El questro are great and the self drive features around there are excellent.

The drive would most likely be from the Pentecost to Wyndam and it is a great drive. If you have done a bit of time in a 4wd in the territory it will be about a 5/10, others will rave about it, but nevertheless it's very scenic.

Not much land based fishing though, heaps of picturesque red wine drinking views to ponder what might be possible though.

Thanks for the info, and Jabsy good tip about the tyres, my hilux came with brand new Toyos on it in Feb, I might have to do a last minute change over to something decent, I was always goin to but thought I'd get a bit more life out of the existing ones. Was it sharp rocks?
