Roof cage bolt-on info

Post by Hemi »

Looking for some views/thoughts on the following...

Getting a flat roof cage for my Hilux and looking at the various options.
One option is bolt-on style which requires drilling holes in the roof for mounting (see pics)
The bolt on ones certainly seem to offer a lower profile, unsure about strength?

Has anyone done this??
Id be interested to know how you went with the drilling, the interior finish, any problems, pros & cons, anything..letc....

Cheers...

Why flat? Thats just like owning a ute and taking the sides off.

Its pointless and more work tying things down.

Certainly not pointless, with the gear I carry a basket with sides is restrictive..
Having a flat rack suits my needs, it also becomes an extension of / And works in with my rear ladder racks.
And it's actually easier to tie/strap things down.

Yeah right.... Sounds like you've already worked out your requirements.

Another pretentious 4x4 attachment for fools willing to pay.

Probably cost more then the one with sides.

Ive fitted the arb ones and looks like its pretty much the same way.
Obviously need to drop your roof lining, remove roof mouldings, need to work out where its meant to sit, mark it out and drill. Then refit everything.
Pretty simple really, just use good quality silicon to seal that doesnt effect the paint. Dont forget to paint the holes after you drill, stops any chance of rusting later.

And yes they are strong but would only have a load rating of around 100-150kgs
Interior finish you dont even notice cause its hidden behind lining

Check out the ocam industries roof cage i just fitted one to my hilux exactly the same as the arb roof rack but a hell of a lot cheaper 500$ delivered from melbourne came with reasonably simple directions how to fit it as well

Cheers Matt,
thanks for that, just had a look at their site.

If you've a tape in your hand in the near future, any chance of getting a measurement of the rack, how far the top of the rack sits off the roof??

A nut and bolt config for holding a roof rack on isnt a really good option, i had my old one fly off when driving on corrugated roads after about an hour of it. I then used Stainless Steel Rivets to attach it and does much better of a job. Also changed over to the more heavy duty way by running rails, which the through bars slide into and then attaching the roof rack. Also kept the really nice and low profile look! Check out the rola roof rack they look wicked

Good points.!! Thanks for the input, it helped big time

Anyway, got it all mounted up now, pretty happy with it.
With the washers, threadlock, nylocks etc etc etc .. I can't see it going anywhere? But you never know?
Also had the roof lining modified so I've got acces now to the bolts without removing the whole
lot... Sweet job!
