Welding crack in aluminum tank

Post by pops70 »

My 120 liter underfloor tank seems to have a crack in the weld of the inlet pipe. Tank is aluminum.

I have exchanged the hose from the filler cap to the welded pipe which sits on top of the tank.

When the boat is elevated backwards, there is fuel leaking from the area next to the pipe.

Is it possible to weld a fuel tank which has had fuel in it ????? Obviously it needs to be emptied, but there will be fumes sitting in there for ages I would assume ....

Who does stuff like that in Palmerston?

Cheers

Tim

You can save $$$ if you lift your floor and remove it yourself

It's a walk-on aluminum tank.

I've had it out before ......

Get it done by someone who knows what they're doing
All fuel tanks should be purged with a non explosive gas and oxygen levels of purge should be below 1% while welding
Some people get away lucky by using other methods ,some don't
You have to ask yourself DO YOU FEEL LUCKY
The past is history, the future is mystery, the moment is a gift and that's why it's called the present

Removal is the easy part. The welding I suggest you get done professionally. Fuel/fumes in the boat is not ideal. One way to clear fuel tanks of fuel fumes is to run a pipe from your exhaust into the tank, once emptied of course, for at least 10 mins, but that will be up to the repairer. Good luck.

Don't worry .... just joking around.

Removing it is the only part I would do myself. Everything else would have to be done professional anyhow, as I don't want to blow myself up ....
