That is insane! I haven't done anything like that personally but years ago when I lived on the Tiwi Islands I went "Crabbing" with some of the locals and that is exactly how they did it. No matter how much encouragement they offered me..... not once did I even think about giving it a go.
It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses has it coming.

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

“Fishing, with me, has always been an excuse to drink in the daytime”

"Soon after I embraced the sport of angling I became convinced that I should never be able to enjoy it if I had to rely on the cooperation of the fish."

Not hard if you can see the crab. Not so sure about the ones he is sticking the hand into darkness down the hole. We used to do a lot of crab hooking in the day and have seen all sorts of things come flying out of those holes such as water rats and plenty of sea snakes. Some times the big mud skippers would scare the cr.p out of you as they come flying out of the darkness at speed

Remedy.

Fill bath tub with boiling water add a little salt to flavour.
Jump right in then bring to the boil.
Just put three of those now illegal stoves under the tube on full throttle.
Once yr nice a pink crabs will be all done.. :titanic:

Been there done that..

older n wiser now though

Carry pliers or a good rock for when u get bit and accidentally snap the claw off as it'll get even tighter ...can take off a finger

Put the claw against a solid object n smash it into bits to get it to release .
Never got bit yet touch wood but seen a few good ones over the years on the locals at coburg
Spear is a safer bet unless u want them alive or need to check fullness or berried females but generally you can tell if you are that close.
Tight lines 'n' keep the shiny side up people.

Beau was doing that in Shoal Bay a few weeks ago. Check out his other videos too, he swims with crocodiles.

When I was a kid I would catch muddies in Rapid Creek with a piece of string with a slab of rump tied to it, once the crab is on the end pull it in very slowly and then have ya mate chuck the throw net over it. Used to get a couple every weekend using this method.

We used to do that out at Gun Point too. My daughter managed one in Blesser creek this way too.
