The rainy season so far
The past month's rainfall anomalies map from BOM shows the Top End is above average, except for the Darwin region, and Cape York is well below.
If it keeps raining as it has it may well be a good fishing year ahead for the NT.
The early meteries at Shady Camp are an encouraging sign!

How do you know they are early meteries? we haven't been allowed to fish it for 20 years at this time of year.

Re: The rainy season so far
I don't know what constitutes early as I have never guided myself to catch a "metery" unassisted at any time or location, however I would say that the witness in this case would indeed seem eminently qualified and could be considered expert in this field.cuddlescooper wrote:How do you know they are early meteries? we haven't been allowed to fish it for 20 years at this time of year.

Lots more rain needed and soon. If we have too long a break between moonsoons we're stuffed.
As for early meteries. IMO this happens every year. The first flush is putrid and full of dead stuff and fermenting grass. However it's pumping huge amounts of nutrient which is supercharging the system.

Take a look at the rain totals since October, some parts are under average by 200mm or more

Re: The rainy season so far
Bwahahaha, only you fellas could talk the terms "early" and "late" into a pissing contest.
The monsoon usually starts around Xmas. January is therefore early wet season and March/April is late wet season.
Hence January meteries are early meteries. Unless I am missing something.
Rainfall late last year was down but it might not matter if it keeps raining now. Cape York not looking so good.
Unfortunately they are predicting below average rainfall, but there's always hope.

The argument states- " The early meterys at Shady camp". Unless you have poached shady camp during the out of season closure it would be hard to make such a statement truthfully???

Re: The rainy season so far
It is quickly approaching the too little too late scenario for the Daly river, rain fall in the catchment is below average, the river has only risen to 10.1 metres for a week. There is very little signs of fish life.
I suspect this is bad news for grandparents and other loved ones, apparently there was an unusually high number of sick/dyeing relatives of barra tournament entrants last year who were unable to come to the river and not catch a fish.

Re: The rainy season so far
Sorry to be a pessimist but it's looking like another fizzer wet. If we don't get something big, very soon, it could be game over. We've had a long a break between rain events now with nothing on the horizon. Although we are slightly above average rainfall in Darwin.
Old mate Alex Julus was in the paper yesterday spooking how good this wet's is. He's usually dead wrong. So by that logic, it's going to be bl..dy awful.
Up until a few years ago most people wouldn't worry about fishing in January and February. But the last few years it seems like if you don't go, you'll miss out on the run off.
Interesting also that we are approaching the record latest date for the first cyclone of the season to cross the Australian coast.
