big threadys on the chew at shady
Hi all
I recently just conducted a trip on the 18/11/2014 (a Tuesday) down to chambers bay area with a mate from work to try for some big barra and thread fin salmon on the neap tides.
and have to say i am most certainly heading back this following set.
it was an early start leaving town at 3:00am for a nice steady drive down to the barrage. We arrived at the ramp on first light at 5:30 which Coincided with the high tide at the barrage which was needed to launch.
After launching we gunned it, and punched all the way down to the mouth of the sampan keen to get fishing. When arriving at the mouth around 6:15am, we were met with a strange sight of being the only boat at the mouth. Which was a welcome sight from the normal 80+ boats causing mayhem out there.
we started our troll heading out mouth, and on our first return heading back in towards the river the lovely sight and feeling of the rod buckling over in your hand as you are giving it a quick jig meant FISH ON!
it was a massive initial hit quickly followed by a powerful and strong line peeling run. after about 2 minutes in of fighting the fish it hadn't risen its head to do any aerial acrobatics, which meant it was one of three things, 1 a horse of a barra to fat to jump 2, a horse of a thready to fat to jump or 3, the dreaded Powertail.
after about 5 minutes of battle I finally got the fish to the boat and was met with the beautiful sight of the yellow fork tail and bucket mouth of the iconic chambers bay thread-fin salmon.
it was 6:30 in the morning and we were on the board. The fish measured in at a healthy grand total of 115cm.
and that pretty much set the tone for the whole day with another two threadys caught over 110cm for the morning session and another sneaky one measuring 117cm around lunch time at the bottom of the low.
we had our chances to catch a few more with getting around another 8 hits but with limited success in setting the hooks.
we stayed in the sampan for the day and ended up landing 0 barra for the day, only hooking the 1 around 70cm.
but when speaking to one of the 4 boats that we saw the entire day at the boat ramp latter on, they seemed to have some good success on the barra at Tommy cut after only catching the threadys in the sampan.
here are a few photos from the day, and i cut a short video of the days catches which is on youtube if you want to check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgNtg8NMatE

How's the water level trying to get to the mouth, I didn't think you would get past the first muddy based area not far from the ramp. How was the ramp?

Cheers lads
@mickkk
If you launch on a tide over 4m at the barrage I have always found you should no have no dramas, even in a bigger boat,
Just take to easy until you get around to where the junction where the island and turn off for the second barrage is. And your pretty right from there.
The lad I talked to on that day got a 103cm barra out of the tommy cut in the same day
