Samson or amberjack?

Post by Matt Flynn »

Samson or amberjack? ... without Googling ...

Nice fish caught during an Arafura Bluewater Charters trip north of the Tiwis.

Well I'm not savvy with the amberjacks, but it doesn't look like a sampson.

Im going to say amberjack. We caught heaps of these of the Marchart 3 at Fentons patches back when the it first opened up. In the day we used to run by a bearing of 314 degrees for 45 minutes from nightcliff until we came across the FAD marker. Then we went 100m North and through a marker bouy over the side and drove around in circles to we sounded the wreck. then we through a second marker on top of it. The fishing was unreal because few people had a GPS then and even fewer new about the wreck. Surprised that they arent all that common in close considering the numbers we used to catch out there.

amberjack I reckon

caught a few north of Perth that size years ago
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!

Especially when you can see them!

Not the best shot for id pretty sure its an amberjack. Don't think you'd get sambos there anyway would you?

Caught a few of both samsons and amberjack.
I reckon its an amberjack, but I reckon its not a garden variety of amberjack.
Looks different to both "normal" ambers and samsons.

All of the ambers I have come accross have had a mask, a black line accross the eyes.
The fish in the pic is IMO an amberjack for sure, but I reckon there is more than one species of amberjack.

You can clearly see the "mask" over that ones eyes Glen, have seen the mask much darker, almost black.

Would have been interesting to give it to fisheries to see if it's a recognized species or sub species, gotta be fish out at these remote locations that no ones knows about
