How do you Maintain, Clean & take care of your Rods & Reels

Post by Fisherman-Rob »

Hi Guys,

Question came up twice this week and wondering how you guys maintain, Clean and take care of your Rods and Reels thanks?

Heard one mate after a days fishing, puts his whole reel & spool submerged in a bucket of warm soapy water for a few minutes, then rinses with cold water and lets air dry? Is this good to do?
Another person says just take off your spool and wash in cold water?

Are these advisable to do and the best way to take care of your reels? or what is your cleaning and oiling process?

What do you guys do to maintain, clean and oil your reels and rods for many years of successful hassle free service?

Your feedback is Much appreciated.

Cheers

Option 2. Option 1 will leave the reel filled with soapy water, it'll turn the reel grease to sludge and take too long to evaporate and cause corrosion.

You could dry the reel then give it a light spray with Inox as well. (not the line tho)

Take the reel off, give the rod a good wipe with soapy water and then wash it again, wipe it dry.

Reels suffer the most through neglect, here's how to look after them:

New reels, remove covers and lightly coat insides with reel grease and replace the covers, when you rinse them, a small amount of salt washes into your reel but will not affect the reel. Tighten the drag before rinsing so it will not affect your drag system. Shake off any excess water. Release drag tension. One drop of reel oil on level wind and reel handle and bail roller. Store in well ventilated area.

Spinning reels, hold with spool upwards so water does not enter through port behind spool whilst rinsing, warm soapy water is better but not necessary.

Fishing rods, just rinse well with fresh water.

Don't do the immersion thing unless you want to give me more work!
Just do what Mako said but make sure the water is applied in a light mist so that you don't force water into the reel.

I use warm soapy water and sponge all reels, rods and let it drip dry. No hose, then wash all the lures you have used in warm soapy water. Had Calcutta reels and t curve rods for 12 years and still as good as new.

After fishing put them in the shower with you, quick rise, leave in the shower to drip dry till the wife puts them away.

It's that easy. Haha

I don't shower with mine anymore because i was getting too attached to her. er, um, i mean it.

tighten up drags
hose down with a very light mist, never a hard flow.
air dry
remove covers, spray with inox or dedicated reel lube , ive used ballistol but still unsure. whatever you use make sure its compatible with braid line.
spray handles, screws, level winders etc etc.
hang up and kiss it goodnight every time you

The only thing I would add to the above is when they are dry, in between uses, loosen off the drags and put into free spool and click your ratchet over
