Giant herrring on fly

Post by john d »

Went for a practice cast with a fly out fit that I haven't used in a while.
Just changed the fly line and put on a 20 lb tapered leader to try and improve my casting.
I put on a small white baitfish imitation fly
Went down to the small creek in front of the ski club.
Got there just on the top of the tide
Upon arrival I started to practice casting near the mouth but struggled to get any distance.
Things looked fishy with small jelly prawns everywhere so I kept on casting.
As I was standing next to the water a school of small trevally started smashing up the prawns.
I was just about hitting them on the head with the fly and had a few hits but they were too small to take the hook. :banghead:
As the school moved out I found a few trevs had beached themselves and grabbed 2 for bait.
Kept on casting into the area where the creek was now running out and got a solid hook up.
The fish immediately took to the air with some great jumps.
With the heavy gear it was quickly landed.
I first thought it was a blue salmon but as it came out the water I was stoked to see my first giant Hearing and on fly.
A few quick photo's and a short swim the fish swam away strongly.
I was quite pleased but still need a lot more casting practice
Nothing else for the rest of the short session.

Cheers Swoffa I need to catch up with someone to teach me .
Here is a pic of my latest catch.
Hooked at the mouth of rapid creek.
Gently released to fight another day.
Unfortunately the fly is no more
As you can see I need some training

Good stuff John, Giant Herring on fly, great stuff
Seems to be more and more of them turning up

Well done on the piercing too, ouch
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!

Especially when you can see them!

That creek is a regular haunt for Giant Herring due to the lake at the back of it. They love the brackish ponds. Rapid creek below trower road is another favourite haunt for them.
