Whats coming out the back of the lights? Might pay to start from the back end and work your way to the front.

Sounds like they have run 2 cables back to the front rather than splitting one. My guess is
2 red wires together to no. 6 for brakes.
2 brown wires together to no. 7 for tail lights
1 yellow wire from LHS to no.1 for left indicator
1 green wire from RHS to no.4 for right indicator
2 white wires together to no. 3 for earth.
The rest do nothing.

I think that's how it would go. If you see smoke its wrong. ;-) The Narva link above sets it out. Be wary of shorts in the cables, dodgy previous work and I have also had a LED that was wired wrong from the factory. A bit of liquid electrical on connectors makes them last a lot longer.

Poor earth / chassis contacts causes Christmas tree effects. Make sure you double check earth/ normally black wire integrity. Wire colors can be different but green by standard is right indicator, yellow is left, red is stop, white are ?". Dang can't recall right now  but that probs points to poor chassis earth, more likely from the output harness of the vehicle itself.
It is not a short circuit, a short will blow your fuse or fuses related to the circuits. Earth wires , don't,get shorted, they'll just create bad power loops.
Btw, double checking earthed points, means derusting, retighting screws and bolts related to that earth point .

chek the fuse for your tail lights on the car, my triton has a separate fuse for the tail light under the bonnet, its in a few cars for some reason, same thing happened to me , no trailer tail lights/ parkers, and that was the problem, your car tail lights will work but not your trailer..
