Any of the jettys and wharfs at night .
Fish under the lights.
Try the neeps they usualy work better when the water is clearer.

Has anyone had any luck around Darwin for squid lately? I was having a fish with my 2 y.o. daughter yesterday afternoon on dusk at east point beach when I caught a good sized squid in the cast net. Was very unexpected but has piqued my interest, would only need a few at that size for a feed.

If you hang a light over at night you can usually attract a few around Darwin, they get them off the wharf during the smaller tides.

Mostly small arrow squid, the big tiger squid seem to kick around the foreshores, you see them more around Cobourg

Hi Matt, I googled both of those and it was definitely a tiger squid. I saw it hanging in amongst seaweed and leaf litter maybe 2 metres from the waterline and netted it; I might have to get down to the beach with a big light and see if I can get a few. I wish I'd gotten a photo, at the size it was I would have been happy with two or three of them to feed the wife and daughter!

Take a fluro down to east point on a spring tide off the top of one of the cliff faces. Use a squid small squid jig. usually a few will turn up on the incomming to high. Mandora jetty is also another good spot. Tiger squid only turn up occasionally. Arrow squid are far more common.

Hi cuddlescooper, can I just clarify that you go on the spring tides? The general consensus I can gather is to do it on the neaps when the water is clear, although if you've had success otherwise then I will have to just hit it over a range of tides and see how it goes.

Cheers,
Andrew

East point always has clear water on the springs. Its the closest point to the sea and the clear sea water comes in close to shore. The spring tide allows for a better spread of light on the water from the top of the cliff. A bright yellow light will work better than a strong white one.

I have got some good size squid around east point on the spring tides at night and also around nightcliff rocks. Got these in a centerpull cast net and some with a spear. These are the tiger squid i believe.

Otherwise around the cullen bay lock these are plenty arrow head squid. Use the smallest jig you can find, they are picky buggers. otherwise centerpull is the easiest way. a good trick is to hook one that you caught in the top of the head and swim him around. they seem to come up from the deapths to follow it around and can get a few on the go at once. Some days have been a little tricky with squid jigs so try a sardine jig and jag the lil fellas.
