Harbour trevally
Been some crazy trevally fishing near Darwin lately, including in the harbour, some big ones too - brassies and GTs, worth a look when the wind drops.

They're always there, just have to find them
Good fun too
Good fun too
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!
Especially when you can see them!

Re: Harbour trevally
I think when the trevally are on, keeping it secret is kinda harsh ... there's plenty of elbow room, and no one keeps them ...Can't keep anything a secret in this place.
But yes, the sight of another boat can be irritating

Re: Harbour trevally
I think the technique people are using has been modified rather than there being more trevally than normal. Darwin is catching up with the rest of the fishing world.

Re: Harbour trevally
Seems to be more golden trevs turning up in the harbour the past two or three years. At least in reports. In 20 years of fishing reports I remember what photos came in to the newspaper and very rarely were the golden trev pix from the harbour.
As for brassies etc dunno. Was always queenfish pix from the harbour, tuna and macks. Might be that people never took pictures of trevs a few years ago.
And yes, there's new fishing methods now and a lot more ways to find out about who is catching what.

Re: Harbour trevally
Yes, trevs have been posted up here, but trev pix were rarely sent to the newspapers before forums and Facebook took off. Was mostly barraz, jewies and macks. Possibly attitudes have changed towards trevs since then, many saw them as a pest years ago. Plus people were shooting on film, which cost money - made you more choosy about pix ...
I remember a couple of pix of mega-size GTs from the Vernons being sent in, don't see any supersize Vernons GTs pix any more.

Re: Harbour trevally
Think you missed the message, I'm saying the trevally fishing seems to be better nowadays off Darwin ...
Except in the case of huge GTs at the Vernons, don't see the pix any more, I'm talking bigger fish than the one you posted there CC, the VW sized ones.

Re: Harbour trevally
Am I the only one that actually eats the things? Smaller models: bled, gutted/gilled and iced quickly, then filleted with all the red flesh removed - nothing better for a fish stirfry or curry. The firmer flesh suits these better. I usually keep the 75cm ones I get. The metrey I just got lately is a little dry, but not terrible if you don't overcook it.Matt Flynn wrote:I think when the trevally are on, keeping it secret is kinda harsh ... there's plenty of elbow room, and no one keeps them ...Can't keep anything a secret in this place.

Re: Harbour trevally
Hi there,
No, I eat them too, when I can catch them.
They are very good as a smoked fish.
Marinated overnight in a home made brine, and smoked in the morning: Yumi!
Have a good day,
Pecheur
