Watching David Attenborough on Monday, he showed something that completely blew me away.
Not all animals need a Mate to reproduce.
And they are not hermaphrodite.
We know Barra change sex at a certain size. Down south a brown grouper (female) will turn blue (male) if the resident male is removed
.
BUT that’s not what I’m referring to.
These are animals that need NO fertilisation.
AND the only give birth to females.
AND there are a number of these animals (parthenogenesis).
And some large critters too.
Most notable. The Komodo Dragon (AND WE ONLY DISCOVERED THIS IN 2006)
A Zoo attendant noticed a clutch of eggs in a pen with a solitary Komodo Drag.
He must have thought, Christ, this is like that movie “The Hangover” someone’s f##ked her.
More critters that can do this on the link below
Thought guys might be interested.

Those ones need no males either. I kept some of them in a tank a while a go.

Re: Virgin Birthing
There's a whole crop of critters that can do this;
Some spiders, bugs, bees & wasps.
The Aphid story is amazing. At the beginning of the season, she gives birth to wingless females. These are already pregnant and start to give birth soon after birth, and so on & so on (like Russian Dolls). These are all wingless females. Who needs males or wings with so much to eat.
Towards the end of the season food is starting to reduce, she gives birth to a few male & female young that have wings. These fly off to other colonies, mate, lay eggs, die & the whole thing is reborn next season
