Beginners Luck

Post by drifter »

I have a couple of mates that come up to my place every year to go for a birthday fish. As they don't get to fish very often, I try to mix it up a bit for them.

With lousy weather forecast, I suggested we go for a crab or 2. Reports in the paper saying this year has been a great year for blue swimmer crabs.

Neither had been crabbing before. Down here (Brisbane Water) its by handline only.

Up early and straight out the front to see if Taylor & Salmon were on the prowl. Not a bird or fish to be seen.

Next, fick a few sandbars for flatties. That resulted in 3 quick fish.

Then the skies opened. Drenched & cold, getting some protection hiding under St Huberts Bridge, the call was made to head back to the ramp & home.

Got back to the ramp, and the rain was just a drizzle, the wind had dropped. I suggested as this was the area we going to crab, we should give it 30 mins. Both seemed keen, so over went the lines.

After a few minutes Jeremy asks how he will know if he has a crab. I said your line will pull tight and you should feel a weight on the end.

Like this he said.

I look at his line & said - yep, that's one.

Bring it in slowly and when you can just see the crab, position the landing net below & behind and calmly lift up I advised.

Can you see it yet - No

Can you see it yet - No

Can you see it yet - Christ it's a monster

Yeah we get some bl..dy good blue swimmer crabs here.

Just get your net under & behind & you should be right.

None of us expected this
