Had been planning a trip for weeks and the weather had been perfect. But wouldn't you know it, as the weekend of the trip arrived the wind had got up and was blowing its guts out. Bit cool for barra over this way and a bit early in the season to I am told. So next best thing was to leave it to a local and get him to guide me onto something with scales. Enter fff1964 (Paul). I hooked up with him at the Barra Nats this year and kept in contact over this forum. So bad weather or not I headed up the coast. Dinner at the Point Samson pub that night and plenty of beers to get primed for the next day. Paul decided to use his UB520 banana boat and I was keen to have a ride in one, be a first for me. We left pre dawn and it was bl..dy freezing! Lucky it was a dry ride! I spent the first couple of hours standing anywhere the sun was shining trying to defrost! Anywhere on to the fishing, within minutes I had my first hook up on lure, only a little cod but a good start. Paul got another one shortly after. We stayed in the same estuary all day. After the tide went out a bit it I switched to bait (some manky froze & refroze pillies coutesy of fff1964!). It was literally a fish a cast for hours after that. Only more cod, plenty of Pikeys and Jacks but for a bloke who had not been fishing since April it was a ball! Any cast outside of a snag was immediately hit by a powertail so as the day progressed and beers diappeared I got plenty of those! We kept a few nice Muddies as well and there were plentiful, could of had as many crabs as we wanted. Great day out, relaxing, plenty of banter back and forth between us, cold XXXX and enough fish to keep it interesting. Just goes to show you that it doesn't have to be big Spaniards or Barra to make a good day out! BBQ that night at Pauls with his family, couldn't ask for better company. Thanks Paul!

Only a couple of months and the Barra will be here.
Port Hedland Game Fishing Club will be hold a barra comp in Hedland this year. Will be small but a great weekend is assured.
