Woke up this morning to one of the rarest things in the pilbara, No Wind! With the cook away and no one else able to get there poop together in quick time I decided to go for a run by myself. By the time I got to the ramp there was a steady breeze that seemed to be building so I stayed close to home and decided to try jigging some gulps which is not some thing I do very often. On my second drift I got hit and had a good tussle with what turned out to be a reef shark of reasonable size. It was a bit of fun on light gear. (penn applause 4000 loaded with 20lb finns and a ATC 5'6" 8kg rod).
Twenty minutes or so passed with no joy so I moved a bit futher down the channel until I found some more bait. I was on again shorlty after and this time I was in big trouble, the fish took a screaming first run that left the reel seriously short on braid. It then continued to peel off any line that I reclaimed for the next ten minutes or so and had me thinking that I was on a bigger shark. With the drag pumped right up and some careful thumbing of the spool I slowly began to make some progress. I have a new found respect for my little ATC flick stick as I had it bent in half for a large part of the fight and it did not give up. I was eventually rewarded with color and was pretty happy to find that it was a GT.
Not big by GT standards but my biggest at this point (12kg) and it was a real battle on light gear, they really make you work.
By the time I had released the fish and re rigged the wind was starting to strengthen so I called it a day.

Top fish mate! Stick with the gulps and you should load up on plenty more. I use them almost exclusively now and catch a lot better quility fish than in the past.
