Hey Liam, welcome. There is probably 10,000 ways to answer that question because tides in Darwin (up over 7m) can not only determine what fish to chase but where you can fish, launching retrieving boats at ramps and general travel around water ways on different depths of lows. Also, a species of fish might bite well on small tides in one spot but if you want to catch that same fish in another spot you might need really big tides. But I will try and help a little. And I am no expert and these are only my observations...
Reef fish - building tides after the neaps but you will struggle to anchor and get your bait to the bottom over 4m of run near Darwin. If you head west you will want bigger tides. Head East in the Vernons and you will want small tides
Pelagics - around the neaps when the water is clearer as spanish macks and tuna predominantly feed by sight
Harbour Barra - Biggest tides and time your fishing to around the low
Landbased - Will differ from spot to spot
Use the search function on this site and talk to the local tackle store owners. But stay out of the water and be ever vigilant for crocs. Hope this helps
Give it go, come back here and tell us how you went, it will easier for people to give you specific advice once we know where you are going, what you are fishing for and how you are fishing for it.
To start with I'd suggest fishing the top of high and the outgoing so you don't get caught out by the tide coming in fast.
G'day mate, i was in the same boat you where a couple years ago when i came up here, trial and error is the best thing, taking in mind what the guys say on here. sometimes i do exactly what the guys have said and catch nothing. other times i do exactly what the guys have said and catch exactly what i wanted. just stay persistent. find water, find structure, find fish, try baits lures and everything in between. early mornings are what works best for me here but i like to sleep in also. if you would like a good spot to fish this weekend let me know, larrakeyah is one of my favourite landbased spots here but you need to be defence to fish the place, if your not defence let me know and i could take you. its no secret that larrakeyah is one of the best spots in darwin and some people are a bit sh..ty about not being able to fish the place from land but im always inviting poeple to tag along with me

Can we just take the warning stickers off everything and let natural selection take its place, I mean if its spinning fast dont put your fingers in it..... Its not hard
Landbased, fish an incoming tide, 3-4 days after a new or full moon, just have to work out the time to turn up at a particular spot so there is enough water for fish to start feeding. The low will be always around 2-3 pm, the water is likely to be stirred up as they are always spring tides, but fish like barramundi, salmon and reefish don't mind as it gives them some cover. For pelagics, try the high tide on the same dates which will be around 8-9 am, the water clarity is better at high tide.
I also have just moved up from melb. Just getting into fishing so have no advice but looking at starting at Fannie bay rocks in the next couple of weeks when my rods get up here. Would be keen for a mate and a beer.

On the spring tides in the dry, try East point early morning, thru to half tide out going, Leepoint early (sunrise)high for queenies and trevally, out going, for barra (neaper tides are good for barra also)Cullen bay rocks- early morning high for pelagics, Channel island same as east point. Neap tides-stokes hill wharf early morning and last couple of hours of the incoming- same for Mandorah. Dundee rocks high springs peaking after sunrise- out going best. Shady barrage- big spring tides-incoming right thru to out going. Just remember Spings are high in the morning and arvo and gradualy get later each day and neaps are high in the middle of the day. Hope that gives you a starting point...just remember -have fun!
