Hey guys,
Today while after running around town Pete (cuddlescooper) and I were pretty bored. Decided on a quick trip out to Corroboree at about 1230pm. Loaded up the tinny and shot out there arriving at about 2pm.
Neither of us had fished the billabong on a long time so we were just on a little exploration mission. After a few minutes on the water we spotted a fishy looking area; bait, birds and crocs.
We fished weedless soft plastics on a slow retrieve and the action was fairly constant up until sunset when the mozzies mauled us and we left. Within minutes I hooked up on this nice 73cm barra.
This was soon followed by a mid-60s barra for me and Pete landed a few 50s.
We got pushed into the bank by the wind which was no problem as we continued to pull fish out of area. I ended up with another two legal barra but Pete was determined to catch rats. He did it well.
Once the barra went shy we started pulling in some solid sleepy cod. Great fish.
Then Pete got a little saratoga.
This followed by a couple of Mouth-All-Mighty.
We left the spot to give it a rest and worked a stretch of bank.
Pete caught a bad case of the dropsies for a while, I couldn’t get a hit. Finally setting the hook, Pete got an absolutely gorgeous Powertail. He was stoked to say the least and wouldn’t stop talking about it until I kicked him out of the car while still moving.
Then I got slapped by a decent fish. After bad-mouthing the way saratoga fight this fine specimen was determined to change my thoughts. It almost succeeded but I still think they are over-rated, other than surface strikes. The are cool looking critters.
The dropsies might be contagious. I proceeded to drop about 8 fish in ten minutes. I think they were all saratoga. Bony mouthed b***ards! Some were heavy fish and no matter what I did I just couldn’t get the hook to stick. The tarpon were rampant.
Pete got another rat barra and we decided to shoot back to the original spot for another quick try before calling it quits. We both got hit simultaneously but unfortunately only my hooks stuck, ending the day on a good note with thick 69cm chrome billabong barra.
Final joint tally: 10 barra (5 legal), 6 sleepy cod, 3 saratoga, 2 mouth almighty, 2 Powertail and a tarpon.
