Stupid question but can someone recommend a hi lift jack for a 76 series landcruiser. I literally know nothing about them, but want one for upcoming trips

Hi Wags, If you get one make sure it is an actual 'Hi lift' brand (ARB sell them) alot of other copies out there are just cr@p. Make sure you get someone who knows to show you how to use them as they can be wepons in the wrong hands. Need to make sure you have proper points (solid) on your vechile to jack from. Also remember they are a recovery item and a tool, not really ment to be used to change a wheel.
All the best

Wags the high lift jack is a nightmare and an accident waiting to happen IMHO.. The jacking mechanism needs to be kept clean of all dirt and dust in order to work properly otherwise when you use it to raise the vehicle you have trouble lowering it again. Needless to say very few of us can keep it that clean
My suggestion is to get your self a "Bullbag" or similar. Different manufacturers call them diffrent names. Basically a heavy duty canvas bag you attach to your exhaust, slide the bag under the area of vehicle you want raised and start the vehicle up. It will inflate the bag as high as you need then just turn off the motor. When finished replacing the tyre (example) simply loosen the valve and slowly lower the vehicle down. THE ONLY REQUIREMENT IS AN EXHAUST SYSTEM IN GOOD CONDITION. The bag is also great when you're bogged in sand or mud...
Any reputable 4WD retailer should be able to help you....

About 15 years ago my govt vehicle had a high lift jack. Then came the day to use it...... and realised no lift points on this new comfy flash Toyota anymore than had more rounded body parts on it than the previous old troopy.
One less thing to have attached to the rear spare wheel.

Go the exaust jack anyday!!! Ever tried to jack a 4wd up in mud or sand - useless ! Exaust jack works on mud, sand, uneven rocky ground, driveway at home - anywhere. Alot easier to store in vehical and easy to keep clean etc . My vote 10 out of 10. I don't even get the toyota jack out anymore when I have a flat or helping someone else out.

Exhaust Jacks are good if you want to get the car up and shove sh@t under the wheels If you want to get out of that bog that just keeps sinking your truck you can't beat a high lift jack Put jacking points in the center of the vehicle, jack up from those on a bog board (form ply plate 18"X18"X 3/4") Kick the truck sideways off the jack and back on to firm fresh ground Repeat at the other end of truck ,let tyres down to 15 lb and drive away in most cases The secret to keeping a high lift jack working is oil nothing on it If it doesn't conform to your demands while using it,pour water on it or p..s on it if you have to They are a weapon in the wrong hands and I have seen blokes knocked out or opened up by the handle on them If you get the full high lift kit you can even use your jack as a winch if need be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-8gFSOTxxA

Never used or owned a hi-lift jack, so might be straying off-topic a bit, but if it's for emergency recovery keep in mind a Tifor (or equivalent ARB) winch. It's a fair effort, but 20-30 minutes of winching is better than the 12km walk I had to do once - went into town the very next day and bought one never to leave the back of my ute. If you're not keen on spending $2-3k on a winch / bar / battery setup and won't be winching out every 30mins, these are great security.

Heavy duty winches are under $1000 dollars now !!! I've used the odd hi lift in my time and used properly will get you out of a bog quickly and easily Them all4 adventure mob stuffed that v8 cruiser front end my just winching the car through the mud rather than jack it up then winch it out could have driven slowly and stayed on the track and not got bogged too !!!

If you get a hi-lift ,also get a fitting that has two hooks that attach to your wheels -cant remember whats it called but it effectively gives you 4 lifting points.

When the jack tilts in towards the car there goes ya paint and a nice ding in ya panel If ya jack each corner up twice ya should e right to drive out no worries first lift to raise the car enough to get a full height lift te second time a good jack plate is the go if in slushy poop like shaggy said
