Been looking at the BOM website and it seems to have a pretty accurate Marine Wind Forecast page.
Wondering what the general consensus is as to what constitutes a safe amount of wind you can go offshore in, obviously dependant on many factors including boat type, experience of crew, tide, wind direction etc etc, but is there a general rule of thumb??

When I was a young bloke and bulletproof, id go out in most weather. In tassie, Ive been out in 5m swells (no chop) Nowadays, I dont like getting bashed about and remember that fishing is supposed to be fun. getting soaked and smashed about is no fun anymore. So anything over 1/2 m swell is it. Wind over 15 knt is too much for me although you can usually find somewhere to hide up here

Depends on size of boat. In a smaller tinny any thing over 10 knotts will be very uncomfortable at best. If you have a 6m or something bigger 15 knotts is as bad as I bother going out in. Mainly because I am getting tired of getting bashed around as well.
After saying this if your half smart and good with charts and direction you can always plan trips somewhere in almost any breeze. Look at the wind direction and use the lee sides of the coast and run along it close to shore then make small hops across open waters till you get to spots. plan to do the longer runs around the tide change so you stop the wind against tide factor. If you have a good swell try and travel when the tide is running in the same direction of swell to stop the waves from peaking and white capping.

Remembering she can go from millpond to maelstrom in very quick time here, you've got to use your loaf about it. Get it right..you're in heaven..get it wrong.. you'll need a surgeon to get your freckle off the back of your throat. There's a swag of experienced boaties on the site, and no one will intentionally give you a bum steer. Listen to all advice.. but..ultimately you're the skipper.

It's all about the size of your agates, horsepower and experience. In my mini tinny I draw the line at white caps, in the big boat almost anything goes. Did an 8m swell once, but that was in a 4700t destroyer with 70,000HP steam turbines. Ahhhhh, going a bit funny in the wee wee just thinking about it

Depends on boat size mate. I've been in 150kn+ in the Southen Ocean however i was on a 100m Customs vessel, get my 4.6m Quinny in that and it's good night Irene!!!
If in doubt, head back in!! Oh, and carry an EPIRB!

To me a major influencing factor is how much do you want to be thrown about. An experienced skipper and seaworthy boat can withstand fairly substantial sea conditions, fishability and crew comfort during such times is generally right out the window.

15 if I’m desperate, 10 is a more comfortable limit. That BOM marine wind site is good as a general guide but you need to check it very regularly, it can change in a matter of hours. Don't look at it the night before and think you're right to go always better to check it in the morning, especially at this time of year but you'll get a pretty good idea if you keep watching it and keep fishing.

Ckecking reguraly is a good point. I also check multiple sites. I usually take a look at three different long range sites. Willyweather, Bom weather and Bouy weather. If all three say its good weather generally it is. If two say its ok it is still generally ok, If they all give conflicting evidence I take an average of the three and get an idea of what it may be like. Usually pretty close by doing this. If nothing else I can get an idea of wind direction an make up my own mind how rough it will be in places.
