Want to go to North Gutter for the first time. Anyone know around about how long it takes to get up that way with reasonable weather, say... doing 30kms per hour. Want to launch from Nightcliff.
Are the FF waypoints the go or are they just a guide?
Any feedback will be appreciated, thanks.
Any GPS coordinates will be really, really appreciated. (PM maybe??)
Was out on Fish Reef on Tuesday but just got sick of getting sharked. Gotta go wider!

Should take you about 1.5 hours to get there, probably a bit longer coming back as the sea breeze kicks in. We normally work the edges of the drop off, just sound along and look for bait on the bottom. There is also a bit of a knoll at the western end which normally holds a few fish. It's marked on the charts and is easily picked up on the sounder.

Its about the same distance as fish reef if not a little closer. Use the fish finder marks as a start point and then sound the walls of the gutter. Remember to zoom your sounder in to see better definition of fish and bottom. Plenty of pelagics up high like trevally and macs. Jigging is fun if you find the bait balls and tuna usually in area so spin gear and chromies should be in tackle bag. good luck.

GOOD LUCK

Thanks Ben, what species of fish were you pulling up? I really would like to catch myself a decent golden snapper.
Just one more thing, I bought some Okta jigs today 60, 80, 100, and 150 gram. Do you still have to use sinkers with them? I was just guessing as to the weights I should use, I've never jigged or used soft plastics before I've always used bait. Would anyone know an average weight jig to use there, I guess it depends on tidal currents?? I am just guessing but I was thinking about 80 or 100 grams.
Any pointers would be awesome. Tuesday 6th December is the planned date of travel, about 3 metres of water movement going on Darwin tides, thought with 3 metres it won't be ripping through so hard.

Use the Octa jigs without sinkers. General rule of thumb for weight would be 100g per 30m of water. Tidal run, line thickness, wind with drift fishing will all vary the weight required. Of coarse anchoring will dramaticly increase this. Choose a weight that will get down to the bottom and stay in the zone. Use the lightest weight possible to achieve this goal as the lighter the jig the better the action.
