Took the old man out fishing 23rd dec to charls point. Beautiful weather and not chop at all, bit lucky. Get out to the first spot and the old feller, being the cocky one he is, throws a twenty on the table for biggest keeper of the day, I gladly agreed! Amongst al the small reefies we were catching dad pulls in a small shark, typical victorian claims it as flake and tries to keep it. After a couple of firm words from the brother and I the small shark went back. After anchouring at a couple of points we decided to drift over a rocky patch, again plenty of small reefs then BANG! got hit by this nice estuary cod. Clearly with the twenty in my possession we packed up shorly after it went quite. Filleted it up tonight and fried some up with some salad and think I'm gonna fish curry the rest. Any good recipes out ther for a good fish curry? Cheers guys

Thats a good question MRB. I have always wondered why sharks are never kept up here. I kept one once and it tasted pretty good but it seems it is just not the done thing in the top end

Shark taken from Arafura Sea are far better eating than their southern counterparts, due largely to the lower salinity of the water. Sharks/rays have no swim bladder, and rely on urea in their system to counteract pressure changes in the water, lower salinity means they don't have to produce as much, hence the better eating quality. 'Trunk' and put into a slurry of ice/seawater. Once filleted and skinned, soak for 1/2hr in cold water with a squeeze of lemon/lime juice and a little salt, batter/crumb/fry/grill as any other fish. YUM!!!.

Every time my mate comes up from SA he always wants to keep afew sharks. He cuts them behind the head and the tip of the dorsal fin and lets it bleeds for half an hour before trunking it and gutting it before it goes on the ice.
I usullay make him hang it of the rear bollard then use the kill tank so the anominia smell doesnt go through the boat.
It actually taste really good so Im really supprise people dont target them more. I guess we are really spoilt up here in the topend.

I have been told they also make pretty good Jewie bait as well.
