The Palmerston club was having a Dundee weekend comp, so I organised with a couple of the members who had managed to put up with me before to go down from Darwin in the Rascal II, we organised all the stuff, food bait ice, and of course a few drinks, left about 3.30pm on Friday and headed off from the Palmerston Ramp, nice little cruise out of the harbour, beer in hand of course, out past Charles Point to a spot in Bynoe Mouth. Hoping for the first of the incoming.
Had a call as we were leaving the harbour from 99, “did you leave something in the fridge?”
Yep, damn, the chicken we were to have for dinner!, oh well, had plenty of other food, but the other guys kept reminding me the whole trip about it!!! cr.p! a bit of chicken would be nice!!
Pulled up on a regular spot now in Bynoe mouth, dropped a couple of baits and bang, we were on, double headers of little reefies, stripies, redfish, a few cod, couple of sharks made an appearance and departed with rigs. Couldn’t get a line to the bottom without it being attacked by the little fellers mainly! Got a couple of smaller Goldie’s, but none of the big ones I was hoping for, and no Jewies either.
The tide started pushing a little and we got sick of wasting the bait so we headed off about 7pm down towards Channel Point for the tide change, had a drop at Loee patches, then Long Lost on the way, but nothing to speak of, coupla little things, wanted to get to Channel Point for the change of tide anyway so we kept going.
It was an easy trip, nice n calm, cruising along, beer in hand, watching the stars!!
Got to there around 10pm and anchored up, dropped some lines, had a beer and settled in, after a while a coupla small fish, and the Blue Salmon started going off everywhere in the light, they were busting up all around the boat, we were catching them with little softies on the surface and having a ball, as well as having them eat anything we tried to drop to the bottom for the Jew.
I moved the boat a little and we had another few drinks, eventually just after the change of the tide Danny hooked up to something a bit better, cranked it in, gave him a bit of curry and he landed a nice little Jew about 90cm.

Nomad hooked up almost straight after this, once again gave a good account of itself, and he landed his first decent one ever!! a slightly bigger one came to the boat, nice. He was pretty happy with his biggest Jewie so far!

The tide started pushing a bit, and once again we were having trouble getting baits down due to the salmon, they were going mad, eating everything in the lights on the surface, it’s a wonder none jumped in the boat!!. We could have kept a good bag of Blue Salmon but we were down there for other things! Vision was starting to get a bit blurry and dribble was getting worse, so we called it a night and passed out.
After too much drinking and not enough sleeping we managed to get up at a reasonable time and head off out towards Bateman Wide, to a usually productive little spot and have a go. Didn’t take long to find some structure and fish showing on the sounder and after a bit of a drift Danny landed a nice little Golden Trevally.

I floated a Pillie out on a single hook hoping for a mack. As my jig got slammed by something on the drop, the pillie went off as well, hanging onto 2 rods and trying to get some line in was fun!!! Eventually I managed to land both, a nice little Spaniard and a decent little Trevally as well .

Every drift we had some good hits and pulled up a couple of nice fish, Tusk fish, Coral Trout, some good Trickies, a nice Goldie slammed my jig and came over the side as well. The water was beautifully calm, a slight breeze made for a great little session!

Nomad did have a small period where he had to have a lay down and try and recover from the over indulgence in the Jack’s the night before, got pretty green at one stage, but eventually got back into it and pulled a few in!

After lunch we headed back in towards the Sand Bars, had a bit of a go at some feeding tuna, Nomad managed to pull a nice little Broadbar Mack out of one pack but the tuna eluded us. We pulled up for a rest as the tide dropped, had a ball catching little Trevally and Queenies near the sand bars, the soft plastics and the poppers worked well there, heaps of little fish around.

We then headed back around the South Peron, over to channel point for the low tide. We did start going through the middle but the tide was a little low and I didn’t want to get the old Rascal II stuck on the mud so we had to come back out and go around.
Once again, heaps of Blue salmon, every drop, I got quite a few estuary cod as well as some other small fish, the Jewies eluded us, I don’t think they were fast enough to get to the baits before they were savaged by the hordes of salmon, we pulled in a couple of douple headers on the bottom rigs, but we were after Jew.
We passed out reasonably early due to the over indulgence the night before, I asked if the guys wanted to set the alarm and get up for the midnight high?? Did not get any very enthusiastic responses! So we all passed out.
Sunday morning awoke about 4am there were some storms brewing so I made the decision to go through the middle of the Perons to the lee of the sandbars while there was still enough water there. Still got down to 3 feet below the boat, but knew the track pretty well and made it through. Anchored up and had another little rest before the sun came up.
We cooked Bacon and egg rolls for brecky and set off to another spot, first drift again bang, a couple of nice little Trickies, Danny got another little Coral Trout

and we caught a few other smaller fish, was a bit slower so we decided to head for Sail and have a go. About 4km on we came across Tuna busting up everywhere, had a bit of a flick, Danny got one in then we lost a couple of others to sharks so we went a bit further.

Just near Sail City came across hordes of them again and had another go, got a couple of little Mack tuna in and lost a few slices to macks as well, then I saw some fish over the side of the boat in the beautifully clear water, dropped the slice in, coupla jigs and it was slammed, Nomad hooked up as well and we had 2 on, big Queenies, long way from the shore!!

We got them both in, tried for a couple more but lost lures to macks, Danny hooked up to a mack and got it halfway to the boat before it did a u turn and headed off, eventually he got the head back!!! Damn sharks again.

We had a couple of drifts and got a few smaller reefies in, but it was just after midday so we set off home.

Stopped at a coupla spots again but no joy, saw some more tuna feeding, longtails in a coupla spots, the deckies both passed out so I grabbed a beer and we were back in the harbour at 4pm and had the boat out at the Palmy ramp at 4.30pm. Another great little weekend trip to the Peron’s, had a ball, might be next year before we get down there again though I think!!!

Its easy to get through there above about 4 metres, as long as you know what track to follow. Basically, if you can launch your boat at the Channel Point Ramp you can go between the islands, just need to keep a little closer to the South Peron, not too close though!
Yep Octa jigs from Gillies, also some others i picked up in Singapore and some off EBay even.

Some nice fish there 86. Looks like one day we will have to have a jig off. I will use gulps and you can use the occy jigs. I only say this because I cant catch a fish on a occy jig and you have seemed to master them. It would be interesting to see which one produces the best or weather they come out on par.

The octa jigs were great. I was standing next to 86 using straight baited hooks. He was using the octa jigs with a strip of squid and smashed me. I switched to the Lucanas jig with squid and my catch rate trippled. Danny used gulps and got a heap of strikes but the hook up rate wasnt so good.
