Took Ziggy down to Shady this morning for a look. Launched at about 7:30am on the high tide, with about 30 trailers already in the car park. Water was way lower than the same time last year.
A couple land based guys were doing their best, but we didn't see them get anything.
Was disappointed to find no fish on any of the barrages up the top. Not even a tarpon to take a lure.
Stuffed around for a couple hours at the barrages looking for fish before heading down to the cutting thinking we might go up to the dead forest, but found the tide had dropped too much and there wasn't enough flood water to make it through. Pushed downstream a bit further and eventually found a creek mouth and set of eddies that was holding a few fish. We landed a couple rats and then put a nice double in the boat, Zig with a 61cm and mine was 74cm. We kept one for dinner and put the other back. Got a couple more rats and ended the session with a just legal silver number.
Headed back to the ramp about 12:30pm. The water had dropped out with the tide and lots of people were casting off the barrage, with a couple boats tied up casting into the current. Two blokes in a 5.5m boat in front of us cruised up to the barrage for a cast, but got too close and got caught up in the backwash and almost sank it, well at least it looked like it from where we were.
It was a very quiet day for Shady Camp - along the river we didn't see anyone else catch anything - so we felt very lucky to have stumbled onto a few fish when we did.
cheers
