Two popular Northern Territory fishing areas are closed for their seasonal respite from October 1 to January 31.
Anglers may not fish during this time in the Mary River Management Zone below Shady Camp barrage - including both Tommycut and Sampan Creeks and a large area outside the creek mouths.
The Daly River below the Moon Billabong outlet near Alligator Head and to the mouth is also closed during the same period.
Refer to NT Government fisheries maps for the exact closure lines.
The point of the seasonal closure is to allow barramundi to spawn undisturbed in two of the Northern Territory's most important barramundi habitats.
Mark the dates in your diaries and make sure you don't fish these areas during the closure.
If you do want to access Chambers and Finke Bay saltwater barramundi outside of the Mary River Management Zone, access is through the Stuart's Tree Fishing Camp, although this will close for the wet season.
Fishing is still permitted in the Shady Camp freshwater during the closure, but the single hook rule still applies within 100m of the barrage, which means no trebles are allowed on lures in this area.

Last night I was at shady camp and it was a shame to see people fishing with trebles off the barrage. But what was worse was that they were fishing in the salt as well. I couldn't believe that people are stupid enough to fish off the bank there either i saw about 20 crocs up that way and some were on the barrage which people were crossing. Dont want some one to get taken but maybe that is what is needed before people get it through thier thick heads.

just a question your still allowed to travel down shady camp out out the mouth and then fish outside these closure lines arent you is there a need for traveling to the stuart tree ramp ??? or is this not the case i though you could travel through these areas as long as your not fishing or have lures rigged on your lines??

You can travel through but dont have any lines rigged and no barra fillets or products on board.

G'day everyone, I'm making my first trip out to Shady camp this weekend. Would be awesome if someone could give me a couple tips for fishing the area, would rather hit the saltwater if possible. Cheers in advance

I fished Shady Camp, land based, 10 days ago on my way to Darwin from Kakadu... folks were catching mullet in cast nets, then fishing with live-bait on both sides of the barrage, all the while downing many beers which they left wherever they fell. Some Darwin copper turned up, as drunk as the group of alco-fishos, and told them he didn't care what they were doing as he was off duty. All this occurred during evening darkness. They pulled out 4 fish between 70 -80 cm in the hour and a half before the mozzies drove me to my tent, and got p...ed off when i let a 70 cm fish go! Obviously the seasonal closure is very well policed! The amount of rubbish down there is disgusting... it sure gives anglers a good reputation! Maybe some of the big crocs should be trained up to, well, regulate the area.

Wow... i mean.. i am sure some of this stuff goes on. .but that is just bull....
li am guessing those blokes were not in their boats on the harbour recently supporting recreational fishing and the susatainable, low ecological impact way that we say NT fishos activley encorouge.
Its allways the minority thats ends up blowing it for the massess..
