I'm using a shimano curado at the moment, I love it but saying that I haven't used much else, especially not in the higher price ranges. Guess it depends on the budget, then you can do a comparison with other brands around that same price. For a mid range baitcaster, I'd definately look at a curado.

I use Shimano - a Curado and a Chronarch. Daiwa also make good gear, you get what you pay for pretty much. If you go into any of the tackle shops around (fishing and outdoor world / Craigs Fishing Warehouse / Tackleworld) they will all look after you.

Ratio's mean nothing really. The faster you wind the faster your lure goes and I've never caught a barra while winding flat out. Pelagics yes, barra no. The speed of your retrieve depends on where your fishing and what lure you choose. I wouldnt worry yourself with ratios too much

thats some fairly high end gear mate. I've just finished a drunken conversation with some lads about how the fishing gear means nothing if you don't know how to use it. I made the point that you can catch metre plus barra on a hand line out in Kakadu at the right time of the year. So to answer your question, yes. they'll handle a barra. my question is, will you

Splash,
I've got a Calcutta TE250 DC that I have on an IMX rod. Since I bought it I have hardly used my curado or Daiwa. I got the 250 for the extra line capacity, they are only a few grams heavier than the 200. I didn't even look at the 100 as the line capacity was too small. On my spin outfit I run a Stella 4000. Best $700 I ever spent. They are pricy reels, but if you can afford it they will last for years.

The calcutta 1000 is too small and has a disengaging levelwind that is too close to the spool. Sharp angles form on the line, and this affects casting performance. Curado is much better on this point. Gear ratios are only meaningful when spool diameter is taken into account. Magnesium is very prone to corrosion, Curados are better here too. Check that the drag is up to stopping big barra, some of the older model curados had a very weak drag. Using conventional round baitcasters with non-disengaging levelwind atm, will look at low profile baitcasters when they produce one with non-disengaging levelwind.

Thanks fellas. Really good input!
Great input, and yes I need to correct myself - I will be trolling - sorry about that confusion.
I have now changed my mind and may now go with the Daiwa Zllion Type R for casting only and the Calcutta TE250 DC mainly for trolling (with some casting)...

If you go for the Zillion I'd check the drag out of the box. Daiwa's are notorious for having a "sticky" drag. They were supposed to have changed the drag washers to fix this but everyone I know who has bought a Zillion has changed to Carbontech drag washers straight out of the box. As for the Calcutta I don't have a bad word to say. a fantastic reel that casts a million miles, has a great drag and holds sufficient line to troll a long way back.

Bought the Calcutta last year so it's the current model. They've been around since about 2002. Mine is mated up to a GLoomis IMX MBR 784C 12-20lb.Great for throwing mid-large lures like classics, B52s and bombers. As mentioned it also doubles as a fantastic trolling outfit. I've spooled it with 30lb super PE and it has stopped some good fish. I'd put the Zillion on a single handed, lighter rod like a 663 or 662 to flick smaller lures and light softies.
