I spent a few hours on the rocks at Wallaga Lake in southern NSW with my 80 year old father in law on Thursday before coming back to Darwin on the red eye last night. We had a ball on the blackfish and drummer again although the drummer claimed us more than than the other way around. We caught a 6 pack of blackfish that averaged 43cm and a couple of smaller drummer. The water calmed off in the middle of the day so it was pleasant fishing for a change. We were restricted in our fishing choices up until then due to a few days of rough seas. All fish were taken on traditional luderick gear - centre pin reels, 3 wrap slow taper rods and floats attached to floating line that to ensure quick line pick up at the float. We used 'cabbage' off the rocks as bait. You cannot beat natural food fished at the source. I was really pleased with my new luderick rod I had built to take down with me this year. It replaced my aging one from my youth. It matched perfectly with my 40 year old centrepin that was hand made by a chap in Newcastle for me. Lifes great when it all comes together, especially with good company at hand.

Hi Smithy, you should see my 60 year old alvey (a little older than me). A fine rosewood 6 inch straight side cast. It is fully serviceable, still in use when I get down south for some beach fishing, and like my centrepin, has the added value of infinite drag. You just develop a nice calous in the palm of your hand along the way. I wish my Curado's and Calcutta's could of be the same value. The Centrepin still has the original ball bearing pressed into the wood. Grease, grease and more grease. Actually lanolin these days. The Alvey side cast has no bearings and still runs on the original shaft. Like an old FB Holden , both reels are a pleasure to drive. cheers
