Hi up there. I'm on a relly run down here in sunny NSW. I went out this morning for a quick fish on the incoming tide near Bermagui. I dug out the old blackfish gear to see what was about. Using cabbage bait I managed 3 luderick and 3 drummer. I was also bricked by some awesome drummer along the way. It's good to see that the fish stocks are still healthy down here.

cool, that was a refreshingly different post Rossco. what do they taste like. I've seen similar looking fish in South Africa, called Hottentot or bronze bream. The darker ones you have there look the same. When I've eaten one over there, they taste slightly oily but delish!
I've got a pic of one, but I'll post it in the spearfishing section.

some fond memories of fishing the southeast coast at the grandparents beach house. quality whiting, bream and flathead in the lake, with black fish and drummer out the front.
by the way, very tasty eating!!!
much tastier than whiting and flathead. prob cause there caught out the front off the rocks. personal opinion really.

Hi Barrabeast, the fish are of good eating quality provided you bleed them and clean the black lining out of their stomach. The luderick and drummer (Rock Blackfish) are predominatley weed eaters and can leave an iodine taste if not handled correctly. I keep mine alive in a mesh bag in a rock pool until ready to clean. I generally skin / fillet mine. They are a top eating fish when grilled with a light coating of butter, lemon, pepper and fresh basil.

Great stuff Rossco
About the only thing I miss about Sydney is the fantastic Blackfish, Drummer and Groper fishing off the rocks. Had some awesome blackfish sessions with my two boys in Sydney Harbour too. Ahhhh . . . . . the memories.
