Can't think of anything closer, and not sure of your budget etc, but this might be worth a look (don't know anyone that has stayed there though): http://www.parapvillageapartments.com.au/
It is walkable, but might be a bit long if you have to stagger back!!!
Edit; oops, Luke79 is a quicker typist! As he says it can be very difficult to get accommodation around then, and you may need to dig deeper in your pocket than you would expect....

Mate, have a look at www.stayz.com.au - there's a fair few alternatives available outside the regular motels/apartments. Got my sister and her crew a pretty poop hot deal when they come up later in the year. Darwin Cup/V8s is always cranked up $ wise wherever you go but.

At a guess I'd say the Malak Caravan Park (maybe 15 minutes by car) but you could try sleeping rough in the long grass - plenty of it real close to the racecourse!!
