Hello all

U might find the attached of some interest.

Its a record of the tagging recaptures in this area for 2011. 276 recaptures.

Noteworthy is:

. nearly all barra that exited the river mouth went south;

. those that went over the dam wall at Awoonga in Jan went south if not recaptured locally;

. one barra had travelled 800km from where tagged to where recaptured and released again;

. where a recapture entry says commercial it means a net; and

. growth rates.

We know that the Fitzroy strain populates estuarties to the south as far as Maryborough and Noosa lakes.

Gladstone Area Water Board is the supplier for Fitzroy strain barra.

I love it, I spent about 30mins just looking at it. Is there something like this for the NT???? Do we have a tagging program??

You will notice the Fisheries boat out a fair bit recently, they are tagging lots of small snapper.

I spoke to a guy involved last week and they are catching some very unusual fish (deep water reef stuff) that are not "supposed" to be in the shallow waters they are tagging in.

It'll explain a bit on how the system works.

Note the King Ash Bay report and the top tagger Michael Powell from Rocky. He's a Roper River regular with us.

That Michael Powell must spend a fair bit of time on the water. Is he a guide or something????

I've never caught a fish with a tag in Darwin before. Heard of a few on the daly but thats about it.

No. He's a police officer ( scenes of crime). Had a heart scare a couple of years ago and now walks banks fishing at every opportunity.

Son Dan was champion tagger last year with 1600 or so.

We've caught about 6 tagged fish in Roper in last few years. Released fish and sent tag data away to NT cordinator. Only got 1 response (got a lure which was good). Don't bother now as they don't seem to have their act together.

Some good info in the report of Bill Sawynock's.

Austag is affiliated with ANSA group (Aus National Sportfishing Assn). There are tagging groups in each state:

eg Qld is Suntag

NT is Toptag

Big golden threadies and fingermark on the chew here at the moment. Mate got 6 king over 1 metre and lost 4 today. Also got cleaned up by fingermark (golden snapper in NT). Going with him to Port Alma tomorrow.

I sent 3 tags in this year to fisheries and recieved a lure for all of them. They also give you a certificate with the details of who and where it was caught the first time as well as how much they have grown. Interesting stuff.

I got one from the Daly in the FFF Barra comp, it had been caught at this years Classic and grown quite a bit in the few weeks until I caught it, will dig up the details. ( ialso got a Reidys Judge and certificate.) Cheers Muntzy.

Fisheries (or whoever does the tagging program) should have all of that stuff publicly available on the net. I've never seen it but it just might be.

I seem to remember a post a while ago about NT barra recaptures, From memory 2rods posted the info. Very interesting indeed fish tagged at corroborree recaptured at shady camp and so on.
