Well after months of waiting for our holiday to Darwin we finally arrived
Wasting no time my brother and I went this morning to a breakwater/wharf just near the CBD (sorry I don't know the name!). With the tide approaching high I thought I would throw around the biggest popper in the tackle box. I don't get to use it in SA, so I might as well here
Five minutes later I had the biggest bust-up on the lure, but no hook-up
As luck would have it that was all the action we had
When these smashes happen, do you have to have to strike the fish or will the rod just load up?
Anyway it had my heart in my mouth and I am looking forward to more

Welcome to fishing with poppers.
Unfortunately hookup rates can be very ordinary at times. Fish usually hit a popper hard. If it connects you will know straight away. No real need to rip the rod up hard unless you want to see your popper flying back towards you.
Sometimes its worth stopping your retrieve after a fish has a go. Pretend they have stunned it. Then give a twitch and retieve again.
