Shot out to Yellow Waters Tuesday night for some tour guiding and some easy kill. Never fished there much this late in the year so it was a good eye opener. We got away a little later than anticipated so we launched as soon as we got there and fished a couple of hours up till midnight. Managed 2 keepers in the 60's throwing fizzers around the middle of the billabong up where the main stretch is.
Next morning we got up early and managed 5 keepers all in the 60's again, before we went back to the room to checked out at 10 and have a swim.
After 'running through' the top order in the morning session, the barra fought back hard in the afternoon session limiting us to only the 3 keepers. They were still biting hard but our luck seemed to dessert us as we couldn't stay connected. There was a period of an hour where we lost 4 thumping fish in the 80's. Combination of no landing net, rookie fisherman, lines busting, hooks busting and hooks straightening all contributed to the horror hour!
All up 10 keepers between the 3 of us. Your typical YW's stuff all in the 60's. Most were fairly clean fish that fought hard. I can't recall too many times I've fished YW's and had a session on 80cm+ fish. Was great fishing in some tight country. Definitely came out of the blue.
Some interesting points to come out of this trip were:
* Seems they have now closed access to the ramp as the gates were closed when we left. Water is also starting to build up next to the road. We also saw a boat come through Home Billabong.
* With all the rain theres heaps of soil from the plains mucking up the water. It really does look like Yellow Water now!
* Best lure was the Bozo's rubber mullet with the flappy tail. Rainbow colour with the tiger lilly stripes. Great lure, but I've gotta say poophouse single hook! They seem like a fairly sturdy hook but we had them straightened as well as 2 breaking clean in half.
* I intentionally kept an eye on the tide times to gauge if the fishing was affected by them in the billabongs and remarkably the best bites were an hour before each turn. Infact the 4 thumpers we lost all came in the hour before the arvo tide turn. After we lost the 4th they shut down and we went back to catching the middling fish again.
* Stick to fishing up and down the channel that flows past the sign. Fishing everywhere else was pretty tough with all the dirty water. With the water levels up, the channel is flowing nicely and is wide and deep enough to get a good cast and retrieve in.
